The most common application of polyurethane is as solid foams, which requires the presence of a gas, or blowing agent, during the polymerization step. This is commonly achieved by adding small amounts of water, which reacts with isocyanates to form CO2 gas and an amine, via an unstable carbamic acid group. The amine produced can also react with isocyanates to form urea groups, and as such the polymer will contain both these and urethane linkers. The urea is not very soluble in the reaction mixture and tends to form separate "hard segment" phases consisting mostly of polyurea.
In the presented work to the synthesis of polyurethanes was used tri-functional polyether polyol based on the oxypropylated glycerol. Mentioned polyol has trade name Rokopol G1000 and is produced by PCC Rokita in Poland. This polyol can be used as a component for the synthesis of polyurethane elastomers, single spray foam, coatings, adhesives, impregnates and varnishes. The presence of three primary hydroxyl groups permits to obtain chemical cross-linked polyurethanes. The polyester polyols imparted good mechanical properties to the PUs but poor resistance to hydrolytic degradation . This group of compounds includes polyether polyols, also referred to as polyetherols, and polyester polyols. Polyether polyols are made by the reaction of organic oxide and glycol. Results from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis of prepared polyurethanes are presented in Fig.11–13. The β relaxation was observed by several authors in the case of polyurethanes [41–43] and can be related to the molecular motions in the polyol main chains and local motions of the polar urethane groups . Generally, thermal degradation of polyurethanes occurs in two main steps. The first step is connected with thermal decomposition of the hard segments (i.e., urethane groups), and the second step involves thermal decomposition of the soft segments (i.e., ester and ether bonds) [32–34].

A polyurethane is typically produced by reacting a polymeric isocyanate with a polyol. Since a polyurethane contains two types of monomers, which polymerize one after the other, they are classed as alternating copolymers. Both the isocyanates and polyols used to make a polyurethane contain two or more functional groups per molecule. The foams based on ESTp were characterized by much larger cells than in the case of the materials based on ETHp. The same tendency was in the case of the PUR systems in which 50% of the petrochemical polyols had been replaced with BIOp.
Moreover, introduction of PEG moieties resulted in decreasing of tensile strength and hardness. The glass transition was found to be lower, which is resulted from higher mobility of polymer chains due to the presence of long-chain extender between fragments of the structure composed from tri-functional polyol. This polyol product has high reactivity, smell-less, and wide product application tolerance. In the early and middle stages of foaming, the foaming rate is moderate, and the later gelation rate is fast, which can meet the foaming needs of different density and high resilience sponges in most application area. Supply of Polyols remained snug throughout the quarter as steep climb in feedstock prices in China pushed back some of its manufacturers from utilizing their full capacities. Amidst the limited supply, several traders were heard offering Polyol cargoes at premium to incur optimum gains from these market uncertainties. With ease in majority of containment restrictions, offtakes of Polyol cargoes from Southeast Asia showcased major revival in comparison to the last quarter. Despite the antidumping probe imposed on the cargoes of foam mattress originated from Southeast Asia, traders reported of steep increment in demand from the US buyers.

However, the supply activities, improved slowly by the end of the May as the production activities recovered effectively which were halted since Q1 due to winter devastation. Thus, the offers for Polyether Polyols price hovered around USD 3915/MT during the final week of June in USA. The Polyol price trend showcased bearish movement during quarter 2 of 2023. The demand was low from regional and international importers due to the sluggish activities in the Polyurethane sector and firm availability of supplies.

XRD patterns were scanned in a 2θ range of 5‒70° at scan rate of 3°/min using X-ray diffractometer . TGA for the PUs were carried out from 30 to 800 °C at 20 °C/min under nitrogen atmosphere using PerkinElmer Pyris 1. All SMPUs were heated from − 80 to 160 °C at 10 °C/min under nitrogen atmosphere and held at 160 °C for 3 min and quenched to − 80 °C, followed by heating again to 160 °C at the same heating rate. The mechanical properties of the SMPUs were measured using an AND MCT-1150 universal testing machine. Testing specimens were prepared in a dimension of 63 × 3 × 0.3 mm3 according to the ASTM 638 standard and the crosshead speed was set to 20 mm/min.
The airflow defines how many open cells are in the expanded foam. Due to the similar cellular morphology the airflow values for the foam obtained with the reference and recycled polyol were similar, as shown for EXP. 1 and EXP. 6 , respectively. The dimension of the cells Rigid POLYOL for insulation materials for both foams obtained with standard and recycled polyol are between 300 and 400 μm. Furthermore, the thickness of the cell struts is very similar for both foams. These results indicate that up to 30% recycled polyol can be safely used in flexible PU foam formulations.

The more stable compounds were retained in the carbon residues during combustion. This char layer was effective in preventing heat transfer, and hindered the spread of decomposition products to the flame region. Shape memory polyurethanes are an important class of polymeric smart materials which can be programmed into temporary shape and returned their original shape by various external stimulus such as heat, light, humidity, pH, microwave, ultrasound or electricity1,2,3,4,5,6.
As shown in Figure 9, we found that reducing the tan δ of the resin in the foams has a positive impact on the resonance frequency shift in our fundamental studies. The latter approach is related to enhancing the viscosity of the foam by reducing air permeability through the cell structure. Therefore, a combination of these two approaches is effective for improving the vibration characteristics. In particular, the enhancement of elasticity is of great importance in the design of a desired resin composition. As shown in Figure 10, another fundamental study concerning the effect of PPG compositions on the viscoelastic behavior of foams revealed that tan δ of the resin tends to decrease as the primary hydroxyl content of the PPG is increased. We assume that high reactivity and fast viscosity buildup in the foaming process derived from a high primary hydroxyl content contribute to the formation of fine and homogeneous phase-separated structures of hard segments and enhance the elasticity of the resin.
Besides, the incorporation of a hydrolysis stabilizer accounted for a decrease in the polyurethane fragmentation, without significantly impacting the conversion of the polyurethane carbon into carbon dioxide. Energy recovery is exploited only when polyurethane wastes and scraps are not suitable for any other recycling strategy; besides, it is very appropriate when PU-based products at the end of life are contaminated. The main difference between incineration and combustion is that the former is an incomplete combustion that may result in the production of toxic gases when not properly carried out.

Wurzt prepared alkyl isocyanate via the metathesis of alkyl sulfate and potassium cyanate for the first time but did not find its suitable use, and in 1869, Gentier performed a preliminary determination of the isocyanate structure. Hentschel produced isocyanates by reacting amines or salts with phosgene, which laid the foundation for industrial development. Isocyanates can be synthesized via Hoffman rearrangement, Curtius rearrangement, and Lossen rearrangement reactions .
Initially, prices declined due to sluggish demand and firm inventory levels. Because of the surplus availability of supplies, European importers increased orders. However, from the 2nd month of the quarter, prices started increasing and rose till the end of the quarter. The prices rose noticeably amid firm orders from regional Polyurethane industries for PU foam in the manufacturing sector due to increased demand for furniture in the retail sector. Simultaneously, feedstock Propylene Oxide costs rose due to stressed availability and shifting upstream costs amid volatile crude oil prices. At the end of Q1, 2023, Polyether Polyol prices in China settled at USD 2851/MT.

In addition, the use of fluorine or its derivatives as additives in various propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics, etc., has been widely recognized . To adapt to different engine operating environments, research on fuel velocity modifiers for rocket propellants is becoming a new trend. The results of this study show that binders with a high pyrolysis temperature can significantly increase the temperature of the burning surface and reduce the burning speed of the propellant.
The results show that with the incorporation of fluorinated monomers, the roughness increased up to 3.99 nm. The surface energy of the WFPU decreased from 44.44 mN/m to 29.09 mN/m with only a small amount of fluorine, and the hydrophobicity of the WFPU significantly enhanced. The Tmax increased from 312.1 °C to 322.0 °C, and the thermal stability enhanced.
Shredded foams can be used as a feedstock for two types of reprocessing depending on the usage of adhesives. Post-consumer waste products cannot be the stock for mechanical recycling due to their contamination or the addition of other materials . The water-blown PU foams contain a significant number of urea bonds, which are formed by the reaction of water molecules with an isocyanate group, following the reaction of newly created amine with another isocyanate group. An important feature of polyurethanes is the presence of alternating rigid and flexible segments. This allows their usage as the elastic elements of furniture and mattresses, lasting coatings, lightweight and durable construction materials and elegant artificial leather.

A typical viscosity of 500–600 cSt defines standard polyols, while the viscosity of the recycled polyol reached 12,500 cSt. Obviously, processing a material with such high viscosity is difficult in the industrial application.
