Living in the city. Do you really like it?

Jelllyjam все записи автора Yesterday when we had English classes we talked about advantages and disadvantages of living in the city and in the country.
Of course, we talked about some modern conveniences, air and water pollution and so on.
But I thought that many people who live in the city want to go to the country for the rest of their life because they suppose country life to be carefree and have a lot of advantages. Of course, they don't realise that in fact there are many problems.
But why don't we like our life in the city?
One day I read some story about the girl who hated her life in the city. And I realised that some of her thoughts are mine thoughts.
The city controls us and rules us. It was the sense of the story.
And it's just so. You must work to be fed and clothed. You can't enjoy stars in the sky for you can't see them because of the pollution. You can't spend much time with your new lover because it's too late and you need not to miss your train (if you go home by metro). And there are much more reasons to hate living in the city...

But what do YOU think of this?

Hm..Let's see.. I agree with your statesments about how hard is life in a big city. But living in the city is more perspective and interesting that living in the country. For example, you can find more places to spend your evening, there are many different shops, hospitals, career ways ect. Of course, townsmen have a lack of spending time with nature. But, I think the easyly decigion is to find a compromise with town and nature: you can live in the city on weekdays, but spend your weekend in the country :-)

Well...You know, I've lived in the country for some years & the first thing I realized- you have to have lots & lots of money to leave there as you like. It was the hell for me. I had to work since early morning till night ‘cose we had no money to buy smth & had to sell vegetables or fruits or animals & so on. There is no time left for your life, you have to work. You have no conveniences; even the hospital is so far, that you can die several times before the ambulance comes. People, who have never lived in a REAL country on your own, please, don’t think about it like if it is a paradise. You are wrong.

I don't think that city CAN rules you. It can be friendly or ugly. :)

A couple of words about a city being a living being :) There's a genius author Terry Pratchett. He's got a story about too much life in the universe:) Once Death (in the Discworld IT is definitely HE) got sick&tired of his duties and stopped doing his daily routine :) The world accumulated too much life in itself and everything, that wanted to have it, got it. So the cities became alive;) they started to lay eggs to propagate themselves and invent different tricks to decoy citizens :) Nobody knows, how it would end, if Death continued his strikes and moral investigations, but a bunch of wizards was in a real danger. They wanted to get out of the city-being, but unfortunately it was impossible. The creature ate tham or put in a cage, 'cause sitizens MUST live in a city. In short words that's an idea of the story. The author considers that the city adsorb your consciousness, your mind, and if you get stuck in it once, you loose yourself.

And at first you've written "citizens", but then "sitizens".
Oh, you know, it's very difficult to tell the difference between mistakes and misprints, 'cause we mix keys on our keyboards sometimes. So I have to check up my posts and comments several times.

And what is Discworld?
And, by the way, what is the name of the book? It's very interesting, I suppose)
