In mid-1999 I was accepted onto the one-year photojournalism diploma at the London College of Printing. Early on in the course I became influenced by the work of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Tony Ray-Jones. As a result, I spent the rest of the year wandering the streets of central London, camera at the ready. I’ve been working in the same vein ever since.
My interest lies in photographing candid situations that momentarily reveal themselves amidst the mundane hustle and bustle of everyday life. Within that context, I like to incorporate a degree of ambiguity or intrigue that doesn’t give the viewer all the answers. I love the entirely unscripted nature of street photography, and the feeling one gets of being practically invisible in a crowd.
I moved back to New Zealand in October 2003 and currently live in Wellington. I continue to photograph what’s around me and am more inspired than ever.
