I think Marc Jacobs is trying to tell us something. That the nineties have been over for ten years and 2009 will birth new looks to dog us for years just like the fashion party of 1999 did.
Remember the bright and bold haircolors? The "Matrix" inspired thin sun glasses with no rim? The thick soles on every shoe available? The pleather, latex and fake snakeskin? The exposed navel? The low-cut jeans? The hipster shorts? I'm telling you we need to stop doing all of this now it's been going on for years. The big T-shirt and leggings look that took over after that did not help matters one bit.
That has got to be the reason he named Russian duo t.A.T.u. as the faces of his autumn/winter line. They're well past their fame as faux lesbian pop tarts, by about ten years - but they did know how to do the school girl uniform look right.
Marc Jacobs stuffed Posh Spice into a shopping bag, what will he do with this duo? He's had strange picks before - among them controversial child star Dakota Fanning, director Sofia Coppola, The White Stripes' Meg White, and singer M.I.A. I can't wait to see what he does with the Tatu girls - and I hope neither one of them is pregnant during the shoot.

Tatu star in new Marc Jacobs ads
Marc Jacobs has named Russian duo t.A.T.u. as the faces of his autumn/winter line.
The designer is famed for his tendency to opt for the more unconventional choices for his advertising campaigns, which have previously featured child star Dakota Fanning, director Sofia Coppola, The White Stripes' Meg White, and singer M.I.A.
The singers replace Victoria Beckham, who starred in Jacobs' spring/summer collection. Mrs Beckham posed in a series of bizarre shots for the designer, including with her legs flailing from an
open carrier bag, poking out from the top of a box, and wearing a
series of unflattering looks, including a dark blunt fringe.
With Jacobs managing to convince the usually preeened Posh to adopt such an unusal series of looks, we look forward to seeing what he comes up with for the upcoming autumn campaign.

AS Marc Jacobs' business partner, Robert Duffy knows the designer better than most - and has given a frank interview about Jacobs' addictive personality.
"Marc gets enchanted with certain things at certain times," Duffy tells this week's New Yorker. "He was buying art until I was like, 'Marc, stop! You've got to pay your taxes!' I'm terrified of the day that he decides he wants to start gardening, because we'll have like Central Park in here or something."
However, Duffy believes there's a simple explanation for Jacobs' excesses.
"He's hypersensitive, and so insecure. About his talent, he's so insecure," he reveals.
Jacobs, who completed a stint in rehab last year, is also philosophical about that side of himself.
"I am a true addict in that whatever makes me feel good, I want to do more of," he says. "Whether it's good for me or not."
On a lighter note, one harmless addiction the fashion world knows (and loves) the designer for is his unconventional choice of campaign faces and that's not something he's planning to change - this season at least. He has just named controversial Russian pop duo t.A.T.u as the girls who will step into the shoes vacated by Victoria Beckham to head up his autumn/winter 2008-9 ads.
