Celebrate Friday the 13th with "The Occult: Mysteries Of The Supernatural" (1977 ) |
Throw some salt over your shoulder and enjoy this 1977 Encyclopedia Britannica short documentary, The Occult: Mysteries Of The Supernatural, hosted by Christopher Lee who famously starred as Dracula in a string of British horror films of the 1950s and 1960s. ESP, Kirlian photography, black magic, telekinesis... Oh, how I miss this particular strain of high weirdness media that was so prevalent in the 1970s.

Watch: Octopus vs. eagle |
Fish farmers on Canada's Vancouver Island spotted an eagle in the clutches of a giant Pacific octopus. Realizing the eagle would soon drown, the men freed the raptor from the cephalopod's tentacles and set it free.
“He deprived the poor octopus of a good meal,” University of Lethbridge octopus expert Jennifer Mather joked to The Guardian. “They’re quite wide in their prey choice. If something is on the surface of the water, and the octopus is close to the surface of the water, it’s food.”

Whole album just the sound of classic mechanical keyboards being typed on |
Taeha Types' Mechanical Keyboard Sounds: Recordings Of Bespoke And Customised Mechanical Keyboards is the album of the year. Roaring into life with the kinetic Apple M011A and the hard-rocking Chicory KB5160AT, it gives way to the delicate ballad Fjell before leaping into the perennial classic HHKB Pro. Granted, some tracks on the flipside might be filler materialthe poppy Keycult No1-65 lacks energy and IBM P70 has all the hallmarks of a slapdash b-side, but it all comes together nicely in the soaring Verne, sure to be a spring hit. My top ten maker tips for 2019 |
In the spring of this year, I started a weekly tips newsletter, Gareth's Tips, Tools, and Shop Tales. I had released a book of tips in 2018, called Tips and Tales from the Workshop, and couldn't shake the habit of tips-collecting. So, I decided to launch a newsletter to share what I was rounding up each week.
The newsletter has been a big success and I am thrilled with the response I've gotten. I decided it would be fun to go through the last seven months content and share ten of my favorite tips with Boing Boing readers. Here they are, in no particular order.
Details Layer Scott of Essential Craftsman shared this pearl of wisdom on an episode about using construction string: “Details layer. The more accurate you can get in your details, even with something as mundane as how you tie your knot – it all accumulates to acceptable accuracy.” This is a maker’s truth. I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately because I am the king of cutting corners, lazy work habits, and fudging the details. So, I know exactly what he means. I think understanding and applying this concept is the difference between a master craftsperson and an amateur. As I work, I don’t put tools back, I don’t stop and sharpen or change blades when I should, I don’t read instructions, I try and rush things, and I try and skip doing things the way I know they should be done. One Million Moms, a far-right Christian group, is offended by Hallmark commercial of newlywed women kissing |
A coterie of Karens, banded together under the banner "One Million Moms," have called for a boycott of the Hallmark Channel after it ran a commercial that showed a married couple kissing. The Karens of OMM aren't against marriage, nor the occasional televised depiction of a chaste kiss between a married couple. But the fact that the kissers were women, gave OMM the vapors. It's a sad time for both the Hallmark Network and One Million Moms, because I imagine OMM makes up about 95% of the network's audience and now these women won't have anything to watch but Fox News and videos of YouTube rallies starring their beloved moral-beacon of a president.
From Yahoo News:
The organization posted a call to action on its website earlier this week after one of the wedding website’s new ads was seen on the family channel, noting on its campaign page that Hallmark’s commercials are “usually safe for family viewing. But unfortunately, that is not the case anymore.” The group’s chief complaint was a kiss shared between the two brides in the ad.
”Recently, One Million Moms received concerns about Hallmark airing a commercial from Zola.com in which two lesbians are shown kissing at the end of their wedding ceremony,” the post reads. “Similar concerns from regular viewers are posted on an online complaint board for the Hallmark Channel.”
The parent organization of One Million Moms is the American Family Association, which is listed as hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Read the rest

'Duck seeking duck' |
A man in Maine realized one of his female ducks was heartbroken after a bobcat “snatched her two fellow ducks from owner Chris Morris’ yard on Dry Moon Lane about two weeks ago.”
So Mr. Morris, who is a special ed teacher, created this little lovelorn duck wanted ad and posted it in the local co-op.
“Duck seeking duck,” the ad read. “Lonesome runner duck seeks companion. Partner recently deceased. Serious replies only.”
“We wanted to post about this to try to find a duck, and that just seemed like the best fit,” Morris told the Bangor Daily News, which reports that the ad led to something new:
Sadie Greene knew exactly what Morris was looking for when she saw the bulletin board posting.
The 32-year-old Dedham resident, a guest attendant at Woodlawn Museum of Ellsworth, also co-owns what she calls “an uncertified organic farm,” the 30-acre Mountain Foot Farm in Dedham. She raises ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens, cows, pigs and sheep as livestock, Greene said.
“We have a slew of male ducks, so [Morris] will be able to take his pick,” Greene said. “Ducks are one of the few species that mate for life, so when they lose their partners, they tend to mourn, but they can replace their partners pretty quickly, so it will be interesting to see what happens.”
Read the restGreene and Morris are arranging a meeting for the ducks on Sunday. Yellow Duck’s favorite food is slugs, and they might be on the menu for the big date, Morris said.

Abbott Labs kills free tool that lets you own the blood-sugar data from your glucose monitor, saying it violates copyright law |
Abbott Labs makes a continuous glucose monitor -- used by people with diabetes to monitor their blood-sugar levels -- called (ironically, as you'll see below) the Freestyle Libre.
Diabettech is a hub for helping people with diabetes manage their health, including by building "artificial pancreases," through which a glucose monitor is connected to an insulin pump, with software in between that measures out small insulin doses that respond in real time (or even predictively) to changes in blood sugar. These can be significantly better than manual interventions for managing blood-sugar for people with diabetes, and can avert life-endangering, life-shortening, and/or quality-of-life reducing blood-sugar spikes and troughs.
The admin of Diabettech posted technical instructions and code for extracting your blood-sugar data from the Librelink so that you could use a different "listener" app with your data, or even connect it to an insulin pump to create an artificial pancreas loop. In particular, it allowed the free/open Xdrip diabetes-management tool to access Freestyle Libre data.
In response, Abbott Labs used US copyright law to have the project deleted from Github, censoring Diabettech's code and instructions. In its takedown notice, Abbot's lawfirm Kirkland & Ellis LLP (a huge corporate firm) advances several alarming arguments about projects like this.
First, they say that creating a tool that interoperates with the Freestyle Libre's data is a copyright infringement, because the new code is a derivative work of Abbott's existing product. But code that can operate on another program's data is not a derivative work of the first program -- just because Apple's Pages can read Word docs, it doesn't mean that Pages is a derivative of MS Office.
