Viluni Lagoon (Albanian: Laguna e Vilunit or Keneta e Vilunit), also commonly Lagoon of Velipoje, is a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea on the Mediterranean Sea in the northern coast of Albania. Throughout history, the lagoon was a sea inlet and has been currently transformed into an estuary formed through a channel from the Buna River. The lagoon of Viluni, is located 2 km east of the beach of Velipoja, about 300 ha of surface, up to 1 m deep and only in small sectors up to 2-3 m. Surrounded by wetlands, it communicates with the sea through a natural channel, in which, due to the ebb and flow, the water changes direction every 6 hours. There is salty water with an average temperature of 20 - 22 oC in July and 5-7 oC in February. It is rich in fish of different types and very tasty. There are also many birds (183 species) migratory and permanent, reptiles and mammals around: rabbit, fox, wolf, wild boar, etc. The lagoon is situated within the boundaries of the Buna River-Velipoja Protected Landscape and has been recognized as an Important Bird Area wetland of international importance by designation under the Bird Life International Convention.
