This panorama was taken on the sand bar separating Glenrock Lagoon (Newcastle, Australia) from the ocean. The lagoon is only open to the sea after periods of heavy rain. The last time this happened was in June 2022.

This coal seam (Dudley Seam) on the cliff at Burwood Beach near Glenrock Lagoon (Newcastle, Australia) was deposited in a swamp environment that was then covered by river channel sediments. The shape of the top of the coal is most likely due to erosion of the then peat deposit as the river channel migrated over the swamp.Also visible is the remains of an old railway line that connected the lagoon area with the port of Newcastle.  There was at one point a copper smelter in the valley of nearby Murdering Gully
