Elcho Castle is a 16th century fortified tower house, adjacent to the River Tay. It was built by the Wemyss family as a country retreat around the time of the Protestant Reformation. This was still a turbulent period hence the requirement for a comfortable residence that was also easily defendable.

A portion of the Smith River Canyon is seen below the surrounding hills. Floating the popular Smith River in Montana requires a highly sought after permit from the state. In this panorama just a small portion of the Smith River is visible between the two cliff faces at the opening view. This panorama was taken after hiking from the river on Forest Service trail #309 up to a ridge between the river and Deep Creek.

Castle Semple Collegiate Church was founded by John, Lord Sempill in 1504. He was killed at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 and the church was duly extended with a three-sided apse to accommodate his ornate tomb. The effigy does not survive. Collegiate churches were built to house a college of clergy. Their duties were to pray for the souls of the Lord and his family, such was the importance placed on ensuring the speedy passage of souls through purgatory and into heaven during the medieval period.
