With origins as a 13th century manor house, the defences of Edlingham Castle were strengthened by the addition of a gate tower and stone curtain wall during the Anglo-Scottish wars. By the mid-17th century it had become abandoned and was being quarried for building stone, leaving only traces of a hall and courtyard with a kitchen, brewhouse and bakehouse. The most complete remaining part of the complex is the three-storey solar tower.

This strategically located ruin is one of the most complete examples of a 13th century castle in eastern Scotland. The remains include a curtain wall, four round towers, hall and a chapel with three handsome lancets. In its medieval heyday it was the seat of power for the earls of Mar. It came under the control of Edward I in 1296 but was held by Robert Bruce against him in the first of eight sieges ranging over four centuries, including prominent roles in the Wars of Independence and the Jacobite Rising of 1715, after which it fell into ruin.

The chapel Maria am Stein was built in 1650 next to an ancient cult place and is today surrounded by grapevines. An open-air tavern is just a few meters away so here religion meets Gem"utlichkeit.
