The abbey at Valle Crucis was founded in 1201. Its name, meaning Valley of the Cross, is taken from a stone pillar located nearby which was erected in the 9th century in honour of Eilseg, a Welsh chieftain. It was the last of 14 Cistercian monasteries to be built in Wales during the medieval period.  The abbey endured fire, plague and rebellion but finally closed in 1537 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. By this time it had become the second richest in Wales.

NASA's Mars Exploration Program (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)    Sol 389: New Record Drive The images for panorama obtained by the rover's 34-millimeter Mast Camera. The mosaic, which stretches about 30,000 pixels width, includes 104 images taken on Sol 389 (September 9, 2013). A new record for drive distance was set last week, 141 meters! Driving this far required lots of autonomous navigation, which left little time for science observations. Last weekend's plan included contact science (MAHLI and APXS) on rock outcrops and another drive toward "Waypoint 1," a location where more detailed studies are planned. The mosaic, which stretches about 30,000 pixels width, includes 107 images taken on Sol 410 (September 30, 2013). I'm in Pasadena this week for an MSL team meeting, but may have to return home tomorrow if the government is shut down. I'd hate to miss the meeting and associated discussions with my colleagues, but as a USGS civil servant I will be required to stop working and cut my trip short. Therefore, I might not be able to work on MSL until Congress reaches an agreement on the fiscal 2014 budget. Fortunately, the rover will continue to operate, as JPL employees are not civil servants. Paper has been produced in Homburg am Main since 1807. Visitors to the paper mill can experience the ancient art up close and make paper themselves. The striking building with its extraordinary pagoda-shaped hipped roof is known far beyond the region. It is located above the town center of Homburg, on the Bischbach, which drives the mill wheel. The waterwheel is in operation all year round and generates electricity for houses and machines in an ecological way.

Looking at the limestone cliff face of Lovers Leap near Callahan, California.  The formation was formed during the Silurian epoch (about 430 million years ago) w/ fossil crinoids & corals found in particular deposits.  Other limestone caps in the area date it among the oldest rocks in the region.  Lovers Leap is a popular location for rock climbing w/ plenty of routes on all sides & on lower formations below.
