This 360° Spherical Panorama opens looking towards the Vermillion Cliffs. I wanted to take this pano as a demonstration of the contrast between the interior of Marble Canyon and the surrounding area that approaches Marble Canyon. Most of my panoramas have been taken either at cliff-side or at river-side in order to show some specific point of interest such as a side canyon or a river rapid. What I like about this panorama is that it gives the viewer an idea of just how vast are the prairie and low rolling hills. Here, the Vermillion Cliffs are more than five miles away. The driving time across the prairie, through coulees, around small canyons, and up and down rough hills sometimes takes more than an hour from highway 89 just to access the rim of Marble Canyon.

This 360° Spherical Panoramo opens with a view looking straight down Saddle Canyon. As you follow it down you can see where it joins the Colorado River just below a butte on one of the lower tiers of sedimentary layers. As you look out across the horizon you can see the familiar landmark of Shinumo Altar. It seems as though no matter where you are in the Marble Canyon area, Shinumo Altar is always in the view. Move your view just slightly to the left end of Shinumo Altar. I didn’t notice it until I constructed this panorama but just a bit below, and to the left of Shinumo Alter, you will notice a long, linear shadow as it tracks from the rim to the northeast towards the Echo Cliffs. The shadow is created by the bluffs of the Eminence Break fault. The low area to the left of Eminence Break is the subsidence graben formed when the Eminence Break occurred. Something else that I did not notice until I constructed the panorama is that far, far in the distance, past the Eminence Break, and even farther out than the Echo Cliffs, is a glimpse of the top of Navajo Mountain which reaches the height of 10,346’ high. You may have to zoom in quite tightly to spot it. It is 75 miles from where this panorama was shot to the top of Navajo Mountain.

This 360 Spherical Panorama opens looking directly at the Eminence Break Route from the south side of Marble Canyon where there is a significant break in the Kaibab Limestone. The break is the result of a landslide and erosion where the end of the Eminence Fault intersects with the canyon wall. The route then decends through the Toroweap Formation, Coconino Sandstone. Hermit Shale, Esplanade Sandstone, and the Supai Formation. There is a route down this break by which a hiker can access the Colorado River at President Harding Rapid. If you are having trouble locating the Eminence Break in this view then first locate the always recognizable Shinumo Altar on the horizon. Shinumo Altar is the large, flat topped mesa just across the river in the opening view. Now, just below the center of Shinumo Altar is the point of a cliff jutting out into Marble Canyon, half with heavy shadow, half with bright sunlight. That prominence is the southern portion of Tatahatso Point. Once you have located that, follow the rim of Marble Canyon downstream, slowly. Not many yards downstream from Tatahatso Point you can see a subsidence of the prairie between Tatahatso Point and Shinumo Altar. Although it appears much less, the subsidence is about one mile wide before it rises up to meet the gray and tan bluffs of the Eminence Break. Eminence Break is an ancient fault in the earth that allowed the land between its two faulted edge borders to “sink” downward thus creating the subsidence. Geologically, the subsidence is called a graben. I titled this panorama The Buckfarm. Rotate the panorama to the left from Eminence Break and you will see the abyss of The Buckfarm and its vast bowl will come into view. When I finally reached the rim after a mile and a half stroll across the sagebrush prairies and rocky coulees I found many rocky points all along the rim. Such was the case when I reached the rim here. No matter where I positioned myself there was always some protuberance blocking at least part of the view down into The Buckfarm. The Buckfarm is huge in comparison to most of the side canyons and other erosive features that form the sides of Marble Canyon and the Grand Canyon. To me, it is much more impressive to view from above than from river level. Take a look at the panorama titled Buckfarm Canyon and you will be able to see The Buckfarm from an entirely different perspective to help realize how vast it really is.

Atop the summit of Lake Mountain (elev. 6,687') in the Western Siskiyou Mountains south of Applegate, Oregon.  The peak is obstructed by trees at the rocky top, but include a good southern exposure of the Red Buttes Wilderness, Preston Peak, Mt. Shasta, & even the Pacific Ocean.  There is a northern shorter summit which has more open meadows.  While the snow was nearly absent where I parked at 4,700 feet, up here nearly 2,000 feet higher it was a couple feet deep & icy.  Clearer views to the south are found in the meadows just below the summit.
