The Forte de S~ao Jo~ao de Bertioga (Saint John of Bertioga Fort in Portuguese), where the diorama is displayed, is an ancient Portuguese fortification at the entrance of the Bertioga Channel, raised as a palisade in 1560, during the Brazilian colonial era, as a defense device agains atacks from indians and pirates as well. In the ends of XVII century a new stone fort was build over the palisade with the job had been finished in 1710. Today the Fort is one of the most important cultural and historica site in Bertioga and it is a museum dedicated tho the colonial and indian heritage of Bertioga town.

Medieval weaponry and plate armour brought to Brazil in 1531 by the Portuguese noble Martim Afonso de Souza to be used in combats against indians and corsairs, the weapons was used but the armour had showed useless due the cold weather and another issues. As a family heirloom the armour was used as decoration piece inside fortifications during the XVI century. Currently it is exposed inside the museum. Maple Pass is visible on the skyline above the trail that leads through rugged mountains and stands of golden Alpine Larches. The elevation here about 5,300 feet, a mile high. It is late September and the larches are turning gold. This show will last another week or two before they lose all their needles for the winter ahead.

Kaigang and Krenak indians dance for visitours at India Vanoire Indian reservetion near Arco Iris town, inland S~ao Paulo State - Brazil. The reservation has its name in honnor to an Indian woman named Vanoire who helps to pacify the confronts against farmers and the Indians. Today de Indian Village is the hometown for Kaingang, Krenak and Terena people from diferent parts of Brazil and also is a cultural touristic place.

The Vit'oria R'egia is the most famous postcard public park in Bauru town, inland S~ao Paulo State. With thousands of square meters of grassfield, and also an anphitheatre nearby an artificial lake it is very popular mainly during the weekends when the population goes there to leisure and to participate in cultural events.

1906 - General William Bancroft, a Groton native who became head of the Boston Elevated Railroad and Mayor of Cambridge, began building a retirement home called Shawfieldmont at the crest of Gibbet Hill. Beginning with a modest bungalow, he planned to add a castle-like mansion and a stable, but ran out of money before the project was complete. 1918 - Property is sold to Harold Ayres, a prominent physician who turned the bungalow into a private sanitarium, which accepted “all but insane or contagious” patients for $20 per week. 1920s - Groton Private Hospital houses tuberculosis sufferers on its long open porches with views 30 miles to Mount Wachusett. 1930s - The Groton Hunt Club uses the bungalow for fox-hunting parties, dinners, dances and nature outings. In 1932 “careless reworks” are blamed for a fire that destroyed most of the bungalow, leaving only the remains of a stone observation tower intact. The Catholic Cross Church in Ochsenfurt is located in the city center. The church is also known as Hospital Church. The nave dates from the time of the Carolingians. The west side was built in the 18th century and the nave in the 19th century. The simple interior contains three altars. During renovations in 1971, a mural of 1448 was uncovered, which represents a stop on the way to Golgotha.

It was one of the last days of an 8 day trekking through the Cordillera Huaywash near Huaraz, Peru. The passes were high, and so were the camps. This view is just before our last camp on 4880 masl (16000 ft).

I love the small roads. Even though a 2-wheel-drive van might not always be the best option for the trip you have to work with what you have. And this road wasn't even that bad. But certainly more scenic than the highway.

The Big Horn River lies at the bottom of Big Horn Canyon which snakes between the Big Horn Mountains and the Pryor Mountains. You can see a few places along the canyon where the cliff walls dip low enough to see the waters of Yellowtail Reservoir aka Big Horn Reservoir. The majority of the canyon lies in Montana with the south end in Wyoming. You can see the Big Horn Mountains in across the canyon and foot hills in this panorama. Much of the area between the camera and the canyon is managed by the National Park Service as the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. The photo was taken on lands managed by Bureau of Land Management. Across the canyon most of the land is Crow Tribal Reservation land as well as some deeded land within the reservation. To the north (left of the opening view) there are many private ranch lands. Finally, to the north are Custer-Gallatin National Forest lands.
