Mother Church of St. Nicholas Built in the fourteenth century, it was dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and then to St. Nicholas. The exterior has a Renaissance appearance with a Gothic rose window and a portal with classical elements. In two side niches there are the statues of St. Nicholas and St. Susanna. The interior has three naves. It has wooden trussed roofs on the ceiling. Wikipedia

Pompey's Pillar was a significant landmark for the Lewis and Clark Expendition as William Clark and his portion of the Corps Of Discovery floated down the Yellowstone River on their return trip. William Clark carved his initials into the sandstone rock and it can still be seen today.

The Tom Taylor Cabin was located in the Marble Mountain Wilderness near Sawyers Bar, California. It was built in the 1940s (the first original structure was built in the 1890s by Thomas Pey Taylor for cattle grazing) & used by the US Forest Service as well as those manning the fire lookout at nearby English Peak for many years. Camping for backcountry hikers was also permitted within. In 2017 the Island Fire swept through here, a high intensity burn that completely annihilated everything in its path, including the cabin. I never got to visit this site prior to the fire, which would've been a lovely forested setting w/ a nearby spring. There are plenty of historic artifacts including a wood stove, all of which now lie in ashen remains.

The Island Fire occurred in the Marble Mountain Wilderness near Sawyers Bar, California during the summer of 2017 from lightning. It was a high-intensity burn that charred through the forest around English Peak & left no undergrowth untouched. Here is the view a year later w/ areas still lacking plant growth & plenty of gravelly sooty erosion.

View from the summit of Union Peak (elev. 7,709') in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. The peak is the oldest mountain in the park & is an eroded volcanic cone that rises abruptly around the wooded terrain. It has clear views in every direction, from Mt. Mazama (Crater Lake) to the northeast, Mt. Bailey and Dimaond Peak to the north, & the Rogue Umpqua Divide to the west. To the south one can see Mt. McLoughlin, the Sky Lakes Wilderness, the Mountain Lakes Wilderness, & even a glimpse of the snowy Mt. Shasta in California. East one can see more gentler terrain including portions of Upper Klamath Lake & the Wood River Valley. Fires from the 2017 summer have also left burn marks within the forest to the south. This summit was chosen for a fire lookout but none was ever built. A well-developed trail takes one up a steep approach w/ perhaps two dozen switchbacks. You don't want to be here during thunderstorms, fulgurites can be found embedded within the large boulders. Gigapixel panorama (1.068 gigapixels), 141 photos, 46208x23104 pixels
