Hafenlohr was first mentioned in documents on 1 May 1324. The place name is derived from the eponymous creek, which flows into the Main here. The landmark of Hafenlohr is the church of St. James. The high altar and the two side altars of the church date from 1816. The high altar shows the Holy Trinity, flanked by the patron saint of St. James and the diocesan patron Kilian. Hafenlohr is located in the W"urzburg region, about 3 km north of Marktheidenfeld. The name Hafenlohr comes from the Old Germanic root word "lara" and originally announced a natural pasture. Hafenlohr offers a typical Franconian townscape characterized by agriculture and silviculture. The old town center is towered over by the parish church of St. Jakobus. The picturesque location between gentle hills invite you to linger. Ciudad Rodrigo, in the province of Salamanca, is a beautiful walled city with a long history. The image was taken on the N-E part of the walls and in the skyline can be clearly seen the bell tower of the cathedral and the dome of the church of Cerralbo. The city played an important role during the Spanish independence war (part of the Napoleonic wars).

The square, named plaza Herrasti, is situated between the walls of the city and the cathedral of Ciudad Rodrigo (province of Salamanca). At that place, in 1820, during the Spanish Independence war (Napoleonic wars), took place the entrance of the enemy (the French) that conquered the city. The cathedral still shows the wounds of the cannonballs. The monument at its center commemorates the heroes of the independence war.

Micha

Shown are the remains of an historic lime kiln (calciner) that was used in the very early 1900s to convert limestone into lime by cooking it at high temperatures. There are two small limestone quarries located not far from the kiln. There is also a small slag pile of discard material near here that was not fully converted into lime.
