Seven obstacles to creative thinking

Среда, 11 Сентября 2019 г. 02:10 + в цитатник

Creative thinking implicates active development of personal outlook and mastering of existing skills. The experiences acquired at work are revised and expanded. As a result, creative people can move with the times. However, there is a series of obstacles to creative thinking

Monotony of information inflow

A narrow mindset causes narrow thinking. A person who is not interested in new cannot be fully creative. An individual whose mind is active tries to find not only the latest information but also various facts about a subject of interest.

Boredom and laziness

Boredom and laziness are the two main enemies of a creative person. An employee with high cognitive interest will never be bored. Such a person will always find productive activity. Laziness is closely connected to boredom. Usually it occurs in the absence of motivation for any activity. Creative people are often full of energy and only feel lazy from time to time. Generally, laziness plays a role of a safety barrier for them to avoid excessive stress

Shortcut search

People prefer not to trouble themselves. As a result, many take the path of less resistance. Difficult situations require maximum mental capacity and really boost a person's brain development. When an individual tries to stay in good shape and rack his or her brain, unusual ideas come to mind more often. However, it is necessary to relax a little after an intensive mental activity.

Lack of aspirations

Desire to reach the top in art or profession is an integral part of success. Lacking ambition, an employee will make little progress, and a career path may be over before it starts.

Criticism resentment

Criticism of actions and plans is a painful process for a person's pride, but essential for further development. Creative people take negative comments close to heart. That is why it is important to draw the right conclusions. It is necessary to separate personal criticism from the criticism of your work, and see the core of things. In case of unconstructive criticism, the best thing is to ignore it.

Lack of questions

A curious mind is an engine for development. It is fuel for a creative personality. The ability to ask important questions and get the right answers forms creative thinking. If you stop asking questions, it is easy to get into a rut. According to experts, mindless obedience to circumstances leads to a narrow mind.

High expectations rejection

Modesty is not a negative characteristic but it can significantly limit both career and creative opportunities of a person. Sometimes it is caused by the fear of failure which experts recommend conquering. Otherwise it can suppress personal abilities. Minor desires lead to insignificant victories that do not bring satisfaction. Sometimes employees believe that they have achieved optimal results, but at the same time, their creative development stops. Experts advise to move forward and desire more.

Erdogan seeks higher trade volumes with Russia

Пятница, 06 Сентября 2019 г. 02:28 + в цитатник

Russia seems to be the country that everyone wants to make friends with. Following the suit of his French colleague, Recep Erdogan expressed loyalty to his Russian counterpart. In a typical of the Eastern culture manner, the Turkish president made big promises which impressed even ardent optimists. He revealed determination to reach head-spinning highs in the mutual trade with Russia at the opening ceremony of the MAKS 2019 International Aviation and Space Salon, a showcase of Russia's aerospace industry. Mr. Erdogan stated that Turkey wanted to increase the bilateral trade volume with Russia to $100 billion. Currently, the volume is hardly reaching $25 billion, so a 4-fold increase seems to be an unattainable goal. Admittedly, such grandiose plans of a cosmic scale fit in a format of the aviation and space event. Speaking of aviation, Turkey has signed a contract with Russia for the delivery of the S-400 missile defense systems. Besides, Ankara has got interested in Russian aerospace developments. However, the contract value is just $2.5 billion and this figure is unlikely to increase bearing in mind Russia’s achievements in space exploration. The only thing that regularly grows in the relations between these two countries is the amount of money invested by Russian tourists in the Turkish economy. In this regard, the statistics are always upbeat. “The number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey this year keeps breaking new records. We predict nearly 6 million Russian tourists to visit Turkey in 2019,” President Erdogan outlined, adding that the tourist flow from Russia plays a significant role.

Seven black swans of global economy

Пятница, 06 Сентября 2019 г. 02:25 + в цитатник

The concept of 'black swan' became popular after the release of Nassim Taleb's book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable. The black swan theory refers only to unexpected events that have a major effect on history. Black swans can be positive and negative such as wars, financial crisis, unexpected meetings, etc. Read about black swans that can become a crunch point in the global economy in our article

Bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers

According to experts the bankruptcy of the largest American bank Lehman Brothers that happened more than a decade ago is a great example of a black swan. It had a negative impact not only on the US but the entire global financial system. In 2008, the bank's liabilities exceeded $600 billion. Having lost all insurances, investors were pulling out of the developing markets and buying up the dollar. The US financial authorities have softened the blow to the world economy stopping the panic at once.

No-deal Brexit

A potential black swan of our times is the UK leaving the EU without a deal, or a no-deal Brexit. The exit date is October 31, 2019. A newly elected British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he is ready for the no-deal Brexit. However, experts believe that such a scenario can lead the UK to a recession. The no-deal Brexit can also affect the EU economy which is now suffering from a global economic decline.

Auto parts tariffs

Escalation of trade tensions between the US and the EU can become another problem of European and global economies. Imposed tariffs on auto parts are one of the issues. On May 17, 2019, the White House administration decided that imports of cars and auto parts pose a threat to the US national security. The car industry saw $128 bln increase in tariffs on imports from the EU and Japan.

US and EU trade tensions

According to experts, continuous trade tensions between the US and the EU are one of the most important black swans. They mainly relate to those metals which are commonly used in industry. In 2018, the US increased tariffs on steel by 25% and aluminium, imported from the EU, by 10%. In response, the countries of the eurozone increased tariffs on US steel by 25%. Recently Washington has imposed restrictions on aircraft supply from Airbus SE. Europe is planning to respond with tariffs against Boeing Co. Escalation of trade tensions between the US and the European Union can have a significant impact on the world economy.

Budget deficit in Italy

Another serious threat to the global economy could be budget deficit in Italy. The third largest economy in Europe can be put under the European Commission’s sanctions in 2020. This year, the country escaped Brussels’ restrictions since failing to reduce budget deficit to an acceptable level. However, the situation may deteriorate. Next year, Italy’s budget deficit will increase to 3.5% of GDP, which is much higher than the acceptable level of 3% established by European rules.

Currency wars

The escalation of currency tensions causes worries among investors and undermines business confidence. It has a negative impact on global markets. In 2019, a stronger dollar became a deterrent to American stocks. The greenback has found support in monetary policy simulations introduced by a number of central banks. The leading regulators have been massively reducing their interest rates. However, US President Donald Trump accused trading competitors, particularly China, in manipulating the exchange rates of national currencies.

Argentina's peso collapse

In mid-August 2019, Argentina's stock market crashed by more than 37% due to the loss of President Mauricio Macri to the opponent Alberto Fernandez in the primary elections. In those circumstances the national currency collapsed against the greenback by almost 20%. Currently, according to experts, the peso is not very stable against the US dollar.

Donald Trump takes on mission to confront China over trade

Четверг, 05 Сентября 2019 г. 02:07 + в цитатник

Every public address of the US President is memorable because of his dramatic tone. Moreover, even his tweets are capable of roiling financial markets and completely changing investors’ sentiment. Speaking in front of the White House, Donald Trump gave a pompous answer when asked about new tariffs he slapped on China’s imports in August. “China has been ripping this country off for 25 years,” he began his speech. “Somebody had to take China on. This is something that had to be done. The only difference is I am doing it,” he said. "I am the chosen one” to tackle trade imbalances with China, the US leader acknowledged his exceptional part in US history. Donald Trump unleashed the trade war with Beijing being aware that it would cause short-term harm to the US economy. Indeed, its GDP growth was downgraded to 2.0% in Q2 2019 on a yearly basis from a solid 3.1% gain in the previous quarter. Economic expansion has been dented by declining exports, business investment, manufacturing, and the housing market. All these are the predictable fallout from the year-long trade conflict.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is enjoying his presidency. Lately, he quoted the words of radio host Wayne Allyn Root in his Twitter account. “President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world...and the Jewish people in Israel love him like he is the second coming of God,” the cunning broadcaster flattered the President.

7 nature-inspired technologies

Четверг, 05 Сентября 2019 г. 02:06 + в цитатник

As scientists create new technologies, they constantly draw inspiration from incredible evolutionary developments of the living organisms. Many modern innovations were copied from nature. Read about the most advanced nature-inspired technologies in our photo gallery.

Energy distribution and bee hive

The instinct drives bees to act in a certain way which in the end benefits the whole swarm. Regen Energy, an American technology company, adopted the so-called Swarm Logic in order to increase the efficiency of power networks. Instead of using a centralized control system to distribute energy overload, the company has applied local control systems. Thus, the systems communicate through wireless power controllers that determine independently where the power is needed.

Velcro

George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, was the first to come up with this invention. He was inspired by the burdock seeds that he once removed from his dog’s hair. When examining them under the microscope, he discovered tiny hooks that could catch the animal hair. This gave start to the invention of sticky material - Velcro. It took years to implement this technology. In 1955, George de Mestral patented this invention. Astronauts, scuba divers, and skiers were the first to try it before it became widely popular.

Lizard skin

Lizards are famous for their ability to climb vertical walls and even hang upside down. Their secret lies in tiny microscopic hairs called setae which cover lizard feet. The setae can stick to the surface due to the Van der Waals force - a type of physical force working on the molecular level. It produces a very strong grip that enables lizards to hold on any type of the surface. Many engineers have applied this lizard-inspired technology for different purposes. Billions of artificial setae allow to achieve a firm grip without using adhesives.

Whale fin and wind turbine

Biologist Frank Fish gave rise to another invention - a wind turbine shaped as a whale fin. The bumps on a whale’s fin cause water to flow more smoothly through the flippers, giving a whale an ability to move fast and swiftly under water. After examining this effect more closely, Frank Fish found that such bumps can be used on the turbine blades in order to reduce noise level and increase their efficiency.

Shark skin effect

When studying skin of a shark, scientists from NASA have discovered tiny sleek scales. This finding later inspired a new coating for ships which significantly reduces the drag. The shark skin effect allowed the Stars and Stripes racing yacht to win the America's Cup race in 1987. Despite the obvious effectiveness of the coating, it was banned for a long time afterwards. However, recently the technology has returned into use.

Speed train and kingfisher beak

Eiji Nakatsu, a Japanese engineer and bird-watcher, enriched modern science with another discovery. He noticed that kingfishers can dive into water without a splash thanks to their sharply pointed beak. The discovery made it possible to invent a high-speed train. Such speed trains create a deafening “tunnel boom” due to a strong wind pressure. Thanks to a beak-shaped nose, a bullet train can now move with reduced noise and low energy consumption.

Architecture and termite mounds

Observing African termites, scientists noticed that they create their homes in such a way that the inside temperature remains almost unchanged. Termites design their nests with the so-called “passive cooling” technology. This system includes a series of ventilation hatches at the top and in the walls of the mound. Architect Mick Pierce was inspired by termite homes when designing the Eastgate Centre in Zimbabwe. Thanks to this technology, hot and cool air circulates naturally through the pipes and ventilation of the building.

Korea may benefit from US-China trade war

Вторник, 03 Сентября 2019 г. 01:54 + в цитатник

Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with the US President his outlook for the trade war with China. Notably, Cook has never commented on the major confrontation between the two largest world economies since it began even though it directly relates to his business. The Chinese market is very important for Apple. Moreover, part of its production plants is located in China. Therefore, the ongoing trade war may significantly affect the iPhone maker. Recently, Tim Cook has broken the silence and expressed his opinion regarding new sanctions on the remaining Chinese goods in a private conversation with Donald Trump. “And I thought he made a very compelling argument, so I’m thinking about it,” the US President said after the meeting. Apple CEO pointed at the competitive advantage that Samsung, the corporation’s main rival, would get in case of the new tariffs were introduced. He believes that a 10% increase in tariffs for the remaining category of China’s goods will directly reflect at the cost of the company's products. The price on almost all Apple’s products will go up – iPhone, Airpods, Apple Watch, MacBooks, and smart speakers. Given this scenario, the South Korean technology giant will receive a solid advantage. However, the success and prosperity of US manufacturers are one of Trump's most important agendas, so he takes such arguments seriously.

Saudi Arabia cuts crude oil exports while US offsets slack in supplies

Понедельник, 02 Сентября 2019 г. 05:06 + в цитатник

According to the Joint Organization Data Initiative (JODI), Saudi Arabia reduced exports of crude oil in early summer by 3.2% to 6.721 million barrels per day. In annual terms the volume of supplies plunged by 7.2%, analysts said.

In June 2019, Saudi Arabia ramped up oil output by 1.2% to 9.782 million barrels per day. In May this year, the production volume stood at 9.670 million barrels per day according to JODI. On an annual basis, it shank by 6.7%.

In other countries the volume of oil supplies also changed. Thus, Iraq scaled down the exports of crude oil by 3.2% in June from May. At the same time, the output increased by 0.1% to 4.601 million barrels per day in monthly terms according to experts’ estimates.

The output of crude oil in Nigeria increased to 2.081 million barrels per day in early summer while in May crude oil was extracted at a rate of 1.926 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, JODI experts noted that the country exported by 2.052 million barrels per day more in the reporting period. In June last year, the production volume was 1.783 million barrels per day while the supplies amounted to 1.771 million barrels per day.

In June 2019, the United States ramped up oil production to 12.614 million barrels per day versus 12.163 million barrels per day in May. According to the JODI preliminary estimates, this figure grew by 18.2% in a year. The country exported 3.415 million barrels per day in the reporting period while in May the supplies volume was 2.9 million barrels per day.

World’s beautiful but dangerous roads

Понедельник, 02 Сентября 2019 г. 05:05 + в цитатник

Curiously enough, tourists want to see more mountainous roads rather than historical or cultural monuments. These roads are perilous. Only an experienced wheelman dare to drive a car on such roads as it requires patience and good reaction in case of an emergency.

See the most dangerous roads that take your breath away in our photo gallery

Road of Death, Bolivia
The North Yungas Road in Bolivia is well-known around the world. This road is considered not only the most beautiful but also extremely dangerous mountain road.

This 70-kilometer highway runs between the cities of La Paz and Coroico. Statistically, there are more than 25 accidents every year that take the lives of several hundred people. Most of the accidents occur due to bad weather, terrible road surface, and lack of bumpers. Drivers are unable to react quickly, falling into the abyss.

AI-Petri, Crimea
The AI-Petri mountain (from Greek "Saint Peter") gives tourists the opportunity to enjoy picturesque panoramas from a height of 1234 m and feel the difference between subtropical and mountain climate.

You can climb it by cableway or undertake a memorable car trip to the pick.

Stelvio Pass Road, Italy
The road through the Stelvio Pass, built by the Austrian Empire, consists of 75 sharp turns and offers views of the Alpine peaks and glaciers from a height of 2757 miles.

According to Top Gear, this is one of the best driving roads in the world. Moreover, the famous multi-day Cycling Giro d'italia has taken place many times on the Stelvio Pass.

Lysefjord Road, Norway
The Lysefjord is a road under the steep cliffs that starts with a 1.5-kilometer tunnel. Then it goes through a flat and very picturesque area and ends with 30 km of winding road with sharp turns and amazing forks. Its length is 42 km, the depth ranges from 13 m to 422 m.

Notably, there is a bridge in the middle of the road where tourists can feast their eyes on the Stigfossen waterfall. At the very top, after parking their car, travelers can visit local souvenir shops.

In some places the road width is not more than 3.3 meters, so the passage for cars, which are longer than 12.4 meters, is prohibited. What is more, there are seasonal restrictions, and in the autumn-winter period, The Trolls' Path is closed for travelers.

UK to save money in case of hard Brexit

Четверг, 29 Августа 2019 г. 02:30 + в цитатник

According to Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in case of the country's withdrawal from the European Union without an agreement, London would save a considerable amount. The UK is not obliged to pay compensation on the terms of a hard Brexit, the policymaker stressed.

The amount of compensation is estimated at 39 million pounds. However, the British Prime Minister assesses the positive aspects of the country's exit from the EU with a deal. Moreover, he believes that in both cases, with or without an agreement, it is possible to benefit. “I think at the moment there is a real chance that we will reach a deal, but in order to get this agreement… we have to prepare for the exit without it. I think the chances of a deal are growing,” Boris Johnson said.

Earlier, Boris Johnson stated that the UK would leave the European Union on October 31, 2019. Brussels has repeatedly emphasized its refusal to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement which contains a controversial issue of the so-called "backstop".

The "safety net", or "backstop", is a solution to maintain an open border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This will be necessary if the EU and the UK are unable to immediately reach a mutual agreement on trade. The backstop has triggered strong criticism by a number of British policymakers who believe that it makes the UK subject to the EU's decisions.

8 most stunning twisted buildings

Четверг, 29 Августа 2019 г. 02:23 + в цитатник

Modern intricate designs in architecture can be surprising even for experts. There are numerous non-standard buildings with an unusual shape all over the world. The so-called "twisted" shape is a very popular design among architects. Read about the most unique architectural findings, surprising and breathtaking, in our photo gallery.

Turning Torso, Sweden

Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was a pioneer in creating spiral-shaped buildings. In 2005, in the Swedish city of Malm"o, he designed the 190-meter “twisted” tower Turning Torso. The shape of the skyscraper was based on the form of a twisting human torso. The tower consists of 9 blocks of pentagon-shaped prisms that twist relative to each other as it rises. Turning Torso is one of the few buildings which has both exterior and interior steel supporting frame in it.

Shanghai Tower, China

The Shanghai Tower is the world's tallest twisted building - 632 m high. The building is a part of a composition consisting of three cutting-edge skyscrapers. The tower’s design is unique and harmonic. It takes the form of nine cylindrical buildings stacked atop each other, all enclosed by the inner layer of the glass facade. Each of the nine zones has its own atrium, featuring gardens, caf'es, restaurants, and shopping areas with panoramic views of the city. Architects managed to create a skyscraper that meets international environmental standards.

Cayan Tower, Dubai

The Cayan Tower is a residential skyscraper built in 2017 in Dubai. Its unusual design is achieved through twisting the tower walls from the foundation to the top exactly by 90 degrees, with each floor rotated by 1.2 degrees around a cylindrical elevator. The interior of the building is protected from direct sunlight by movable screen panels. All communications are located in the central " service core" of the tower. Its observation deck provides a breathtaking view of the city. The skyscraper is 307 m tall.

F&F Tower, Panama

This amazing tower became the first spiral-shaped building in Latin America. It was built in the downtown of Panama City in 2011. The skyscraper design is rather complex and is based on rotating geometry and a prism. With the help of the talented local architects, this audacious project was brought to life. As a result, the 243-meter steel-concrete skyscraper, lined with sparkling mirror tiles, giving the building a futuristic look, has become the main attraction of the city.

AL Tijaria Tower, Kuwait

AL Tijaria Tower, built in 2009, is 218 m tall. It has a spiral structure that is built around a circular-shaped core. The tower is constructed from slab edges which are shifted against each other in a clockwise manner from floor to floor. This is how the skyscraper twists by 80 degrees as it climbs from the ground level to the top floor. The tower features vertically organized six-storey sections, each with a private atrium garden.

United Tower, Bahrain

A unique 50-storey skyscraper United Tower, built in 2017, is located on an artificial island in the bay of Bahrain. The tower looks like a huge drill. The spiral starts its twist on the octagonal foundation rotating counterclockwise and providing a magnificent view of the bay. A luxury five-star hotel occupies the first 14 floors of the skyscraper, while the rest of the building is dedicated to offices, shops, and apartments. The tower’s height is 200 m.

Mode Gakuen Spiral Tower, Japan

The 170-meter Mode Gakuen Spiral Tower was built in Nagoya, Japan, in 2008. The spiral building houses three vocational schools: a fashion college, a school of information technology and design, and a medical school. The supporting structure of the building consists of a central core made of steel columns filled with concrete. This central core supports the three cone-shaped wings of the tower. Mode Gakuen Spiral is equipped with one of the most advanced seismic isolation systems in Japan which makes it resistant against strong earthquakes.

Generali Tower, Italy

Generali Tower was designed by a brilliant architect Zaha Hadid in 2018. It reaches a height of 170 m. The skyscraper has become the heart of the large-scale CityLife project. The building is totally “green” as it is equipped with the most advanced alternative energy systems. The tower features sunshades, natural ventilation, and a daylight system. The supporting structures provide energy-efficient heating and cooling.
