Foreign investors are flocking to Saudi Arabia’s equity market, having bought stocks at record worth in January, Bloomberg reported. Investors express optimism as the Saudi Arabia stock market has been upgraded to the rank of the largest global exchange floors.
In January, speculators outside the Middle East invested in total 4.4 billion riyals ($1.17 billion) in Saudi equities that was the highest value since 2015.
Foreign institutional investors also welcome the news that the Tadawul All Share Index (TASI) comprising shares of domestic companies will soon be assigned to the group of emerging markets. The news could encourage more capital inflows to the Saudi stock market. Interestingly, analysts report that Saudi investment funds have been cutting purchases of domestic shares.

Chinese oil producing and refining companies managed to significantly increase profits last year. According to the report of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country’s oil and petrochemical industry registered earnings growth of 32.1 percent in 2018. Chinese oil companies became leaders among the rest of the industrial sectors, where the average growth was almost three times less, 10.3 percent. The profits growth caused an increase in revenue or vice versa. The aggregate profit of the industry reached 839.38 billion yuan ($125 billion) accounting for 12.7 percent of the total generated by the Chinese industrial enterprises. The oil and petrochemical industry's total export totaled 701.87 billion yuan, up 22 percent. The export of specialty chemicals, synthetic materials and organic chemical materials expanded by 19.7 percent, 17.2 percent and 21.6 percent, respectively. Investments in oil production and refining rose by 6 percent in 2018, reversing a decline for two consecutive years.

Moody’s raises Russia’s rating to investment grade |
Last Saturday global credit rating agency Moody’s upgraded Russia’s sovereign rating to the bottom stage of investment grade Baa3. Before that the agency kept it at junk level Ba1. Moody’s was the only one among the top three global agencies such as S&P and Fitch which kept rating of the Russian federation at the bottom of the investment category BBB-.
Agency’s analysts believe that Russia’s increased rating reflects the positive impact of measures introduced by the government to strengthen public finances and reduce the country's vulnerability to external shocks, such as new sanctions.
Moody’s also reported that the US was very likely to impose new sanctions on Russia in the coming months. However, the measures taken by the Russian government in the past years are able to protect the country’s economy and finances.
Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov finds the Moody’s conclusion to be fair. The official believes the fact that Russia was assigned investment rating by three leading international agencies should be a good sign for investors.

These fields located on the shelf possess oil reserves of 123 billion barrels. Experts emphasize that the stock level is impressive. Brazilian company Petrobras has invested over $200 billion in the development of Santos/Campos, although it is rather difficult to extract raw materials here.
Burgan (Kuwait)
The Greater Burgan, a group of oil fields, is located in the south of Kuwait, in a desert area. It includes over 5% of the world's oil reserves. This group consists of three fields: Burgan, Ahmadi, and Magwa. There is over 75% of proven oil reserves in this deposit. The total extracted volume of hydrocarbons varies from 9.14 billion to 10.7 billion tons.
Ghawar (Saudi Arabia)
This giant oil and gas field in Saudi Arabia is the world's largest one in terms of oil and gas reserves. It is located in the Persian Gulf basin. Proved and recoverable oil reserves range from 8.1 billion to 12 billion tons. This field is entirely owned and operated by Saudi Aramco, the state run oil company. Ghawar was explored in 1948, and put on stream in 1951. About 56.6 million cubic meters per day of natural gas is produced here. The bulk of the world's oil reserves, 60-65%, was extracted within the period from 1948 to 2009.

US charges Huawei with fraud and stealing of technologies |
According to Bloomberg, the US Department of Justice filed criminal charges against Huawei, China’s telecommunication company, alleging it stole technologies.
A 10-count indictment unsealed in Seattle charged the management of Huawei with fraud. These claims are related to the American company T-Mobile. Seven years ago, Huawei engineers visited this organization where they saw Tappy, a phone-testing robot. In 2014, T-Mobile filed a suit against Huawei accusing the firm of breaching the contract. The American corporation charged Chinese colleagues with stealing some of Tappy's details and illegally obtaining information about its characteristics. US consumer sentiment remains downbeat |
The University of Michigan released the consumer sentiment index for January. The key gauge of the US consumers’ confidence was revised upwards, but it still remained near the 2-year low.
The index improved slightly after the US government reopened. The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index was revised upwards to 91.2 points versus the preliminary reading of 90.7 points.
Richard Curtin, the Chief Economist at the University of Michigan said that the consumer sentiment might be called pessimistic. Termination of the government shutdown led to insignificant improvement.
At the same time, the Expectations Index rose to 79.9 points comparing to the previous reading of 78.3 points. On the flip side, the indicator reflecting assessment of the current economic conditions declined to 108.8 points from the level of 110.0 points.
Richard Curtin said that the ongoing conflict between Donald Trump and the government should end in order to prevent significant deterioration of the consumer sentiment. If the index remains at the current levels throughout this year, then it can correspond to a rise in the consumer spending of 2.6%.

Shutdown costs US economy $3 bln |
Russian experts estimated losses inflicted on the US economy by the longest ever shutdown. Remarkably, the US economy maintains the momentum, being the largest world’s economy despite a 35-day partial shutdown of the federal government. US GDP slightly eased a pace of growth in Q4 2018, undershooting the forecast by mere $3 billion. One can point out that it is wrong to assess overall damage through GDP data for the final quarter as the shutdown kicked off on December 22. Its fallout will be exposed later. The budget crisis is sure to trim GDP data for Q1 2019. The most negative forecast suggests that the shutdown has subtracted almost $8 billion. The resilient US economy is expected to recoup losses in the quarters to follow. However, $3 billion accounts for 0.02% of the projected GDP for the whole 2019. The US economy will never be able to regain that loss.
Interestingly, the US President endorsed a temporary budget. It means that the affected agencies, including the US State Department, the Commerce Department, and the Department of Homeland Security, are reopened, though the US President and Congress still cannot agree on funding for Trump’s main campaign pledge to build a security wall along the Mexican border. Nearly 800,000 federal employees were not paid for the five weeks of the shutdown. Besides, a lot of private contractors also were made idle. Nevertheless, Donald Trump decided to spent that $3 billion on the pay to federal employees, citing his respectful attitude to working people.
