THE JOKER

INTRO ; Wireless. Imogen Heap.
The Joker, Harvey, Bruce. There are parts of this song that embody all three of them. See if you can pick them out for yourself. ;)

[instrumental]

1. World Town. MIA.
This is Gotham from the Joker's POV. A little cracktastic, yes, but the lyrics ring true.

Sick of all the shit that's keeping me down
If you're dead from the waist down,
It's easy staying down.

2. Hang 'Em High. My Chemical Romance.
Pure anarchy in a two-and-a-half minute song.

Would I die for you?
Well, here's your answer in spades.

3. Money, Money. Liza Minelli & Joel Grey (from "Cabaret")
This is the Joker making fun of - or perhaps terrorizing? - the mob. Also a little cracktastic.

A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound, a buck or a pound,
Is all that makes the world go around,
That clinking, clanking sound, oh!
Can make the world go 'round.

4. Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Muse.
I mainly included this song because it's the same song that Heath sings in 10 Things I Hate About You, but this version by Muse takes the song to a whole 'nother level. It's menacing and sarcastic, and when I listen to it, all I can think of it the first time the Joker sees Rachel. The "Well, hello, beautiful!" that he says? You can hear that same tone in this song, and I just love it.

You're just too good to be true
I can't take my eyes off you
You feel like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much

...

Pardon the way that I stare
There's nothing else to compare
The sight of you makes me weak
There are no words left to speak

5. There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of It Yet. Panic at the Disco.
Joker at Harvey's fundraiser. 'Nuff said.

I'm wrecking this evening already and loving every minute of it.
Ruining this banquet for the mildly inspiring and...
When you're in black slacks with accentuating off-white pinstripes, whoa!

Everything goes according to plan.

I'm the new cancer, never looked better,
You can't stand it.

6. Don't Cry Out. Shiny Toy Guns.
Also at the party. He's telling Rachel about his scars, but he's thinking about something else entirely.

Ten nine eight, and I'm breaking away
I'm all dressed up and I'm ready to play
Seven six five four, and I'm all over you
Counting three two one, and I'm having fun...

7. Paycheck. Placebo.
A frenetic song for a frenetic mind.

I'll have your guts for garters, just for starters
Don't you make me frown.
She could've been a nutter,
So I had to cut the mother down.

8. Clowns (Can You See Me Now?) t.A.T.u.
When I first listened to t.A.T.u. about six years ago, this song always reminded me of the Death Eaters from Harry Potter, but now, it's all the Joker. The lyrics don't make sense at all, but that's part of the reason why I love this song so much, heh.

See me here in the air,
Not holding on to anywhere,
But holding on so beware -
I have secrets I won't share.

9. The Bomb. Bitter:Sweet.
This song is poppy, yet cynical. Just the kind of paradox that suits the Joker, right? It also kind of goes perfectly when he's walking out of the hospital as it's blowing up, lol.

No time for sleeping - there's too much to do.
Don't you forget that we do what they want us to.

10. The Sharpest Lives. My Chemical Romance.
There are no words to describe how PERFECT this song is for the Joker. Just listen to it, and you'll get what I mean. The lyrics, the music, everything - it all sounds like it's straight out of the Joker's brain. <3

This alone, you're in time for the show
You're the one that I need,
I'm the one that you loathe
You can watch me corrode like a beast in repose
'Cause I love all the poison,
Away with the boys in the band

11. Little Universe. Charlotte Martin.
The Joker speaking to Batman at the end of the movie - specifically, "I think you and I are destined to do this forever." This song is creepy and spine-chilling like that entire scene.

Don't know exactly where I'm aiming
Is this the end and the beginning?
I've gone too far,
You've gone too far.

12. Music Box. Regina Spektor.
This song might seem cheerful and upbeat, but it's really not. Its quirkiness disguises a feeling of entrapment and insanity - perfect for a Joker stuck in Arkham, don't you think?

...And start to feel mortality surround me
I close my eyes and think that I have found me
But life inside the music box ain't easy
The mallets hit the gears are always turning
And everyone inside the mechanism
Is yearning to get out.

INTERLUDE ; Mama. My Chemical Romance. (Joker → Harvey.)
I kind of imagine this as a duet between the Joker and Harvey. Weird, yes, I know, but it seriously reminds me of the hospital scene, when the Joker acts as sort of a mentor to Harvey. Same thing here, I think! Just think of "Mama" as "chaos." ;)

Mama, we all go to hell.
Mama, we all go to hell.
I'm writing this letter and wishing you well,
Mama, we all go to hell.

...

And when we go don't blame us, yeah.
We'll let the fires just bathe us, yeah.
You made us, oh, so famous.
We'll never let you go.
