Media Literacy Seminar in Ukraine
July 15-July 30, 2006
Applications Due by April 30

Towson University and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine are now accepting
applications from junior faculty in the former Soviet Union and
Eastern Europe who have at least two years of teaching experience in
Sociology, History, Gender Studies, Political Science or Journalism to
participate in our long-term ReSET seminar starting this summer on
"Establishing Media Literacy in post-Communist Universities" that will
take place in Kyiv, Ukraine.

The program will provide an interdisciplinary discussion of media
studies for junior faculty from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet
Union, drawing on various theories that are used for analyzing the
relationship between the media and its place in society. The
theoretical study of the media and its broader cultural, economic and
political implications will be explored.

The goal of the project is to encourage a re-thinking of contemporary
scholarship in the region by offering seminars facilitated by leading
media studies academics from Western and East European universities.
These scholars will introduce junior faculty from Eastern Europe and
the former Soviet Union to new content and methods of teaching by
comparing and contrasting North American, British, Continental and
Soviet/post-Soviet media research models that will enable participants
to strengthen their critical ability to make sense of the way the
media reflect or influence society. The program will serve as a
catalyst for post-Communist universities to develop relevant curricula
based on the content and methods of teaching offered at the summer
program.

The program will provide travel, lodging and meals for participants.
Selected participants will be notified of their acceptance to the
program by May 15.

Applications are due by April 30.
