Ðîäèëñÿ â Îðëå, â ñåìüå çåìëåìåðà-òàêñàòîðà Íèêîëàÿ Èâàíîâè÷à Àíäðååâà (1847—1889) è Àíàñòàñèè Íèêîëàåâíû Àíäðååâîé (óðîæä¸ííîé Ïàöêîâñêîé) (óìåðëà â 1920) — äî÷åðè ðàçîðèâøåãîñÿ ïîëüñêîãî ïîìåùèêà. Óæå â äåòñòâå ïðîÿâëÿë èíòåðåñ ê ÷òåíèþ. Ó÷èëñÿ â îðëîâñêîé êëàññè÷åñêîé ãèìíàçèè (1882—1891). Óâëåêàëñÿ òâîð÷åñòâîì Øîïåíãàóýðà è Ãàðòìàíà. Þíîøåñêàÿ âïå÷àòëèòåëüíîñòü è ðàçâèòîå âîîáðàæåíèå íåñêîëüêî ðàç ïîáóæäàëè åãî íà áåçðàññóäíûå ïîñòóïêè: â âîçðàñòå 17 ëåò ðåøèë èñïûòàòü ñèëó âîëè è ë¸ã ìåæäó ðåëüñîâ ïåðåä ïðèáëèæàþùèìñÿ ïàðîâîçîì, íî îñòàëñÿ íåâðåäèì. Îêîí÷èâ ãèìíàçèþ, Àíäðååâ ïîñòóïèë íà þðèäè÷åñêèé ôàêóëüòåò Ñàíêò-Ïåòåðáóðãñêîãî óíèâåðñèòåòà; ïîñëå ñìåðòè îòöà ìàòåðèàëüíîå ïîëîæåíèå åãî ñåìüè óõóäøèëîñü, à ñàì Àíäðååâ íà÷àë çëîóïîòðåáëÿòü àëêîãîëåì.
