"Mist Mountain Colors"

"Dreamscape"

The Sun Fortress
Warm sunset rays burst through this massive arch in the sea cliffs of Oregon's Ecola State park. An amazing display of light created by the misty sea air. I used a Tamron 24-135 LD lens and no filters to render this image. Exposure was somewhere around 1/15 second at F14.

"Winter Lake Valley"

"Awakening"

Rainbow Falls
Sunset light filtered through trees cast onto waterfall terraces. Mount Hood Wilderness, Oregon. 70-200 lens at 200mm. Polarizing filter. 1/2 second at f/11. Single exposure.

Paradise Gardens
Wildflower meadows and waterfalls, Rainier National Park, Washington, early morning. 17-40 f/4 lens at 17mm, 1 second at f/20, polarizing filter. Single exposure.

Winter's Fury
Blizzard on Oregon's Iron Mountain. 17-40 f/4 lens at 17mm. 1/250 second, no filters. Single exposure.

Lord of the Valley
The high Sierra over Owens Valley, Sunrise. 70-200 f/4 lens at 160mm. 2-stop hard step GND filter + polarizer. 1/10 second at f/11. Single exposure.

Coast of Wonders
Sunset, Olympic Coast. 16-35 f/2.8 II lens at 16mm. 2-stop hard step GND filter + polarizer. 1.3 seconds at f/14. Single exposure.

Canyon Life
Lone tree clinging to life amidst the walls of a Utah slot canyon softly illuminated in warm reflected light.
70-200 f/4 lens at 180mm. 1 second at f/18. Single exposure.

The Beginning
Sunrise, Vermillion Lakes, Canadian Rockies. Probably the best light I have ever witnessed. 17-40 f/4 L lens at 26mm. 2-stop hard step GND filter. 1 second at f/18. Single exposure.

Fountain of Light
Wave action at sunset, Oregon Coast. My artistic interpretation of the scene involved rubbing a slightly moist cloth on the lens to accentuate the light diffusion effects, but the image remains very sharp. 24-105 lens at 65mm, f/22. 1/4 second exposure with polarizing filter.

The Tree God
Bristlecone Pine at dusk, White Mountains, Winter. It was a 50-mile round trip trek on foot to reach this grove in Februrary. 16-35 f/2.8 lens at 16mm. 20 second exposure at f/18, twilight. Polarizing filter.

Song of the Tides
Sunset, Oregon Coast. 16-35 f/2.8 II lens at 16mm. 1/4 second at f/14. Polarizer and 3-stop reverse hard step GND filtes. Single exposure.

The Temple of Winter
The Canadian Rockies' Mount Assiniboine, as beautiful as any mountain in the world, catches the first light, reflected in a misty Lake Magog on a very cold October Morning.

November the Seventeenth
One of the finest displays of light I have ever seen sets the backdrop for Banff's famous Mount Rundle, Canadian Rockies, Alberta.

Canon 17-40 at 32mm. 1 second at F18, ISO 100. 2-stop hard Singh Ray ND grad (moved slightly during exposure to prevent 'grad-line' appearance. Processing in RAW with minor dodge/burn only in CS2.

Flames
The sunset was one of the best I've ever seen, but I found myself on a lonely beach without much for complimentary subjects so I used a 1 second exposure to capture this wave streaking towards me. It's one of my favorite images. 17-40 at 17mm. 2-stop grad ND filter.

Magic Mountain
The place you see here is among my favorite spots on Earth. At least twenty times, over four or five trips, over three years I have sat here and watched the sun rise on Mount Rainier. The river below leads from the Emmons glacier away from the massive peak. A few late wildflowers still blooming compliment the foreground. One night after full, the moon was setting in the West above the mountain as the first light struck the peak.

I had known for some time now that this spot was very special. With the right atmosphere and conditions the shot could be spectauclar. Rarely have I seen a better natural compostion of features in a landscape.

One this magic morning, everything finally came together. Alpenglow illuminated the East face and clouds streaking over the peak for all of five minutes before disappearing. It was one of the most astonishing and brief displays of light I've ever seen. I made many images, most using two grad filters to control a difficult exposure.

Blue Night
Exposure was made about 1 hour after sunset using a 2.5 minute exposure at ISO 100, F/9 with a 17mm lens and light graduated ND filter. I identified the location earlier in the day and returned after shooting the sunset. I felt the nightime blues complimented the ice formations on this mountain lake.

Radiance
Early morning light bursts through the trees along Oregon's Rock Creek, one of the last remaining native forests along the coast.

17-40mm at 17mm. Polarizer + 4-stop soft grad filter. 1 second at F18.

Ancient Spirits
This magical moment happened in the early morning over Oregon's Painted Hills National Monument. The hills are stained with the remains of thousands of ancient creatures that perished millions of years ago as massive volcanic eruptions blanketed the region in layers of ash. The layers have erroded over time revealing many telling stories. The sunrise speaks for itself. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Thanks for looking.

Canon 5D, 17-40mm at 20mm. 3-stop hard grad, minimal PS work.

Mossy Falls
One of my favorite locations, off trail in Oregon's rugged Columbia wilderness. Three treks back here this spring to capture the shot exactly the way I wanted. 2-seconds at F11, ISO 320, polarizer, 22mm.

Desert Light
Death Valley National park, sunrise. Single exposure, ISO 50, 3-stop Singh-ray ND grad.

Dream Time
Rock striations in the weather beaten headlands overlooking the endless rugged shoreline at twilight. I spent literally two full days hiking up and down the coast looking for a spot like this and was finally rewarded. Exposure was 3 minutes at F16. ISO 100. 3-stop hard ND grad. Minimal PS work. Thanks for your comments.

Crater Lake
What an unusual place to photograph Crater Lake is. Not only for its unique geographic and geological features, but because you're always looking down at the subject. For years I saw the images from the masses and even some talented photographers that failed to capture the amazing grandeur I thought was inherent of the place. I visited many times before I knew what I was doing with a camera and my images failed as well. The problem seemed to be the inability to show scale, perspective and depth from above (not to mention they don't make a lens wide enough to encompass the whole lake). Things I kept in mind during this trip at all times. A backpacking trip on snowshoes around the 30 mile rim in five days. I wanted a truly vast landscape capture of the park and thus far, this has been my best attempt. Canon 17-40, 3-stop hard grad.

Crimson Glow
From my backcountry campsite in Oregon's Three Sisters Wilderness. An impressive display of twilight color illuminates the clouds over the three distant summits. After the heavy snows, the trees seemed to be bowing towards the grandeur of sunset. Canon 17-40, 2 stop soft grad.

Ocean Fury!
Photographer's Comment
I found this incredible vantage point that allowed me to overlook the crashing surf at nearly eye-level. The inherent danger, of course, was that I was risking a lot in camera equipment to take the shot. A huge wave could swamp me at any time. I kept looking over my shoulder, ready to flee the rock should the big one roll in. During my intervals on the rock I fired off rapid-bursts totalling around 150 shots in 10 minutes as the sun sank beneath the horizon illuminating the crashing waves. Of all those images only one was exactly what I was looking for, as an explosion echoed off the far rocks. I used only a polarizer to cut the coastal haze and water glare and shot every image at 1/4 seconds so the crashing waves had maximum visual impact. Captured on Fuji Velvia 50.

Spring Showers
An abstraction of water falling captured at Oregon's magnificent Proxy Falls. While the entirety of the three-hundered foot waterfall is dramatic, I wanted a more intimate perspective depicting the terraced basalt, covered in lush mosses. I climbed up to the side of the falls and pulled out my long lens and exposed Fuji Velvia 50 with no filters.

Monument of the Sky
Peaks in Washington's Goat Rocks range stand amidst a sea of clouds at sunset. I used a 30 second exposure to soften the clouds and contrast the mountains and small aperture for the sun star effect. Captured from my camp near an icy summit. Fuji Velvia 50. Polarizing and 1 stop GND filters.

Rainforest Gorge
Oneonta Gorge in Oregon's Columbia Wilderness resembles a Utah slot canyon dropped in the middle of temperate rainforest. Lush and ever-dripping walls of ferns and moss line the deep cavern above Oneonta Creek. Canon 17-40 lens, Fuji Velvia 50 RVP, Polarizing and 2 stop GND filters. Bogen Tripod. Exposure 2 minutes at F19.
