Snowflake Monday

Anyone who followed my snowflake-a-long special project more than a year ago knew I was growing really, super-duper, intimidatingly tired of white snowflakes by the end of 2014.

Besides, Christmas was coming; the fudge and divinity addicts were getting fat. Please do put a calorie-free amigurumi on this tired cyclist's yoga mat. To the electric guitar-strumming of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, if you please...

The frustrations I was feeling then prevented me from completing a bonus PDF snowflake pattern booklet I'd planned to release last year to thank those who contributed extra generously to the fundraising efforts of my husband and me in our fight against multiple sclerosis. I had this gigantic and elaborate snowflake pattern plan that never materialized and even now is fractured, although not completely scrapped.

Initially I'd planned to publish my "Frozen"-inspired Rock and Troll patterns here on my blog nearly a year and a half ago, but as I wrote and tested the Troll pattern and took photos to show the complicated aspects (THE NOSE!!!), I realized the instructions were growing far too long and complex for a blog post. I finally decided to include them in the booklet.

For the last 18 months, I've been working earnestly to complete the designs for more fantastic crocheted "Frozen"-inspired patterns. Weeks and weeks turned into months and months. I finally was growing so frustrated, I didn't know if I'd ever get the next booklet done.

A month ago, while we were traveling home from my uncle's graveside service, The Lizard suggested I hold off on the two patterns I haven't written yet and include them in next year's booklet. The movie "Frozen" will never go out of style, right?

Finally releasing today's pattern is such a huge relief because I'm finally Just Letting Go of my (too) huge aspirations of trying to include EVERYTHING in one booklet. Realizing the booklet won't ever get done if I don't take a break and release the completed patterns that have been on the shelf for nearly 18 months now and the pattern that's been giving me such heartache. Maybe I should change the name of that one pattern to Heartbreak Head...

As a result of learning how to Let it Go, I am very happy to announce my new 2016 pattern booklet to benefit the fight against multiple sclerosis finally will be available next week! Yippee!!!

Because today's Moss Snowflake pattern (which is an essential component in the Rock and Troll pattern, which has been giving me such fits) is rather plain, I've includes photos of a plethora of snowflake varieties possible just by changing up snowflake tips. Almost any snowflake pattern may be adjusted to feature your favorite points.

Almost any snowflake pattern may be adapted to a star, too, by omitting one point and making spacing adjustments in the remaining five points to accommodate the change. Sometimes, the changes required are minimal and a few patterns need no adjustment.

Today's snowflake also makes a nice snowflake by binding off at the end of each round. So even though this is a simple and plain pattern, creative possibilities are endless and imagination-building/stretching.

To change up the points on this snowflake, just replace the chain 3 tip with whatever point you like best.

My favorite snowflake points for years were 3D Crystal Snowflake for Mom, Big Wet Heavy Snowflake and Feather Snowflake. Then I came up with the Eris Snowflake tips, and tips on that snowflake were my new favorite for a few weeks. After my biopsy last year, I created new tips on my Pun Intended Snowflake that have temporarily bumped the old favorites off the chart for a while.

Finished Size: 6 inches from point to point
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 8 crochet hook, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, glitter, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line
NOTE: To change up the points on this snowflake, just replace the chain 3 tip (between 2/dc shells) with whatever point you like best.

Moss Snowflake

With moss color or lichen color, make magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ring, * ch 3, 2 dc in ring; repeat from * around 4 times; ch 1, 1 dc in 2nd ch of starting ch 2 to form 6th ch 3 sp of Round. Pull magic circle tight.

Finish: Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin snowflake to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Sprinkle lightly with glitter. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow snowflake to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel snowflake from wax paper or plastic wrap. Attach 10-inch clear thread to one spoke, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch the snowflake twirl freely whenever you walk by! Snowflake also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.

Snowflake Saturday

Once again, I'm celebrating Snowflake Day/Make a Snowflake Day, this time with a project of epic proportions, in every sense of the word. Yes, I know. People want to ban the word "epic." And for good reason. But none of the synonyms (i.e., ambitious, classic, impressive, grand, marathon, etc...) carry the same weight for what my husband and I have built.

One of the favorite things my siblings and I loved to sneak off to do when we were very young was climb onto the top shelf of the closet in the boys' room, where we would color with crayons on the turned-on bare closet light bulb and let the melted wax drips splash onto paper on the floor below. As we gained experience balancing on the closet shelf, we'd hold the paper right below the light bulb and blow on the wax for a splattered look.

Mom caught us one day, probably because we were being way too quiet, a deadly thing when you have seven kids under the age of 12 in the house.

The lecture we got from Mom was enough to keep us from playing with light bulbs ever again. Then Dad got home from work. Dad is an electrical engineer. We were in BIG trouble.

I've been afraid of light bulbs as toys ever since!

I've been enamored with the crocheted lamp globes I've been seeing around the internet for more than five years. One of my readers, Susan, even crafted one for me of my own snowflake patterns several years ago. I've been afraid to put a light bulb inside it. Yet I love it!

A Gift from Susan

Flash photography has forced me to become a little more comfortable working with lights. LEDs seem to be a safer light source than the light bulbs of my childhood. Even I enjoy light painting with fiber optic LEDs!

According to Matt, crochet and lights may indeed be safely mixed. Matt's glorious flower lamp inspired today's project. THANK YOU, MATT!!!

Inspired by Matt

I give you fair warning: this is a pricey project. The IKEA lamp I ordered (because I didn't want to brave Christmas shopping crowds in November when I first decided to make this lamp) is not cheap, and postage was practically outrageous. (But far better than spending a winter Saturday on crowded highways, in a crowded and likely snowy parking lot, wandering a Christmas-shopper-crowded store and standing in line at that crowded store to pay for one lamp.)

So, an expensive project, yet whenever I look at this gorgeous lamp, it's worth every dime that went into it. I might even have to make another one with blue snowflakes. Maybe I'll even make one with my crocheted flowers...

My New Lamp!

Another warning: This is not an overnight project. Although snowflakes work up quickly, they need to be stiffened, and this project requires a whole lot of them.

When I first began this project, before I ordered the lamp, I thought I'd need 84 snowflakes because Matt used 84 flowers.

I didn't know my lamp is bigger than what Matt used to make his project. My lamp required 157 snowflakes!!! That's nearly double what I'd expected! At one point, I realized I had to make at least 20 snowflakes a week to get this project done in time for today. Oh, did I mention today is the second annual Snowflake Day? Happy Snowflake Day!

I had to make far more snowflakes than what I expected, but just look at this lamp now. Don't you think it was worth every single crochet loop???

Snowcatcher Snowflakes and Shadows

One last word of warning. This project requires assembly, and lots of it. Perhaps if you buy the lamp in the IKEA store, you can get one already put together. I don't know because I've never been inside an IKEA. Assembly really didn't bother us, but I acknowledge there are crocheters who don't want to stiffen snowflakes, much less build a lamp that sometimes pretends to be a slinky or sporadically auditions for the role of a bunch of skinny tangled knitting needles.

By the time I glued on the final snowflake, this project had taken me nearly three months start to finish. But again, just take a look at it. This is the best thing my husband and I have ever built. So far. I think it was more than worth everything we put into it. Don't you?

If we ever sell our house, this baby comes with us!

Blissful Snowflake

Today's snowflake pattern is the final flake I crafted specifically for our lamp. I needed 20 more snowflakes for the top rounds, and all needed to be small. We were driving home from cross-country skiing up Mill Creek, and I wanted to be done with snowflakes and with white for a good long while. I made all 20 snowflakes in that one four-hour drive!

This is my favorite of that joyous snowflake cramming session. I'm not sure there is a word to describe the joy I felt as I bound off this snowflake!

Finished Size: 2.75 inches from point to point

Make magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc in ring, take loop off hook, insert hook through 2nd ch of starting ch 2 and replace loop on hook, pull loop through ch (popcorn stitch made), * ch 3; 5 dc in ring, take loop off hook, insert hook through top loop of 1st dc and replace loop on hook, pull loop through top of 1st dc (popcorn stitch made); repeat from * 4 times; ch 1, 1 dc in top of starting popcorn to form 6th ch 3 sp of Round. Pull magic circle tight.

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc over post of dc directly below, * 3 dc in next ch 3 sp, ch 5, sl st in 3rd ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch, ch 7, sl st in3rd ch from hook and in each of next 4 ch, ch 5, sl st in 3rd ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch, 3 dc in same ch 3 sp; repeat from * around 5 times, omitting last 3 dc of final repeat; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin snowflake to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

Glued and Ready to Apply

Lamp Assembly: Assemble and hang lamp as directed in manufacturer's instructions, but don't snap the paper flowers into place. Remove the plastic snap centers from the paper flowers. Glue one snowflake to each snap center. (I used Elmer's Glue-All, NOT the water soluble school glue.) Allow glue to dry thoroughly. (I let each set dry overnight.) Snap snowflakes onto lamp. (I started at the bottom and worked my way up. My sleeves often would catch on the lower snowflakes and dislodge them as I snapped upper snowflakes into place, resulting in another night of gluing and drying before reapplying. Working from the top down might be a smarter way to complete this lamp.)

After you finish snapping snowflakes into place, make sure you have a lot of room on your camera's memory card, because you're going to need it! More photos next Wordless Wednesday!

Wishing everyone a beautiful holiday week-end and a wonderous New Year in 2012.

In celebration of this time of year I am sharing a fun little snowflake pattern with you. For now it is just a stitch diagram, so my apologies to those of you who can’t read those yet. Maybe a good New Year’s resolution is to learn that skill as it does open the whole world of international patterns to you. If you have trouble reading the chart because of size, click on the photo and it should enlarge it.

Once you’ve stitched up your snowflake and tucked in the ends, pin it out and use your favorite fabric stiffener to make it into an ornament. I prefer to brush the stiffener on once the snowflake is pinned out, instead of dipping the fabric in the solution first. Once one side is dry I un-pin the flake and if needed will brush more stiffener on the back.

You can also sprinkle a bit of glitter over the flake while the stiffener is wet to create a sparkly snowflake.

For the first 4 snowflakes (the ones in the middle), i used this pattern: http://www.mockingbirdhillcottage.com/2011/11/crochet-snowflake-garland.html
But i changed it so it would have 6 points, like a snowflake, rather than 7.

Then i came up with my own.

I am no pattern writer, these are just my notes... So, if it doesn't make any sense (very likely), let me know, and i'll do my best to explain it.

Top row of snowflakes:
ch 6, sl to join
ch 3 (acts as first dc), dc, ch1, *2dc, ch1* until there are 12 stitches, sl to join
*ch2, dc ch4, sl tbl of first chain, ch2, sl next stitch* rep around

Bottom row:
ch 9, sl to join
ch 3 (first dc), 17dc, sl to join
ch 7, sl tbl of 2nd chain, 3sc, *ch6 sl tbl of first chain, 3sc* repeat ** to end, sl to join

If anybody tries these out, please show me! I'd love to see them!

These very simple snowflakes look absolutely stunning decorating projects or simply as a hanging decoration in their own right. They are quick and extremely simple to make, not to mention extremely addictive!!

These snowflakes work with all types of yarn and hook size. Why not play around with thicker yarn and a chunkier hook, or a finer thread and a smaller hook? It's up to you. Depending on how big or small you would like your snowflakes to be.
I used a size 4 hook along with some "Rico Creative Cotton." I also had a play around with many different shades and didn't stick exclusively to traditional Christmassy colours. See...the choices and possibilities are endless!!!
Just so nobody gets confuzzled, I've written this tutorial in U.S crochet terms.
Sooooo...........let's get creating!!!

To begin make a slip knot onto your hook.

Chain 4.

Join into 1st chain with a slip stitch to form a circle.

Ch 4 (this counts as as hdc, ch 2). Now working out of the centre circle. Hdc, Ch2 (5 times)

Join to the 2nd Chain of your initial Ch 4 to form a wheel with 6 spokes (as shown below).

You are now going to be working out of the 6 spaces of your "wheel".
To begin sl st into the first space to the left of your hook.

Ch 3, sl st into same space.
Ch 5, sl st into the same space.
Ch 3, sl st into the same space.
You should have finished the first of your snowflake clusters and hopefully it looks something like the picture below.

Pretty simple eh?

You now want to fill the remaining 5 spaces with snowflake clusters. So go ahead and follow the instructions below:

*ch 1 (this carries you to the next space), sl st into the next space.

Ch 3, sl st, ch 5, sl st, ch 3, sl st*

Repeat between * and * 4 more times.

ch 1 and sl st into the very first sl st of this round.

You can now go ahead and fasten off. How easy was that!?!

Alternatively you can add a little ball ball or bell to the centre of one of your snowflake clusters. To add a beel or ball ball to a snowflake cluster:
ch 3, sl st,
ch 3 and pull to make a lose stitch.

Remove your hook from your work and add the bell or ball ball of your choice.

Place your hook back into your work.
ch 2

sl st.
ch 3, sl st.
Continue your snowflake as normal.
Go ahead and sew in ends.

Hopefully your snowflake looks something like this?:

Now to finish these gorgeous little snowflakes! I recommend blocking them to get the best possible shape and appearance.

To do this I made my snowflakes wet and squeezed out any excess water.

I then blocked the snowflakes to a piece of polystyrene (a piece of cardboard box will also do the trick!), Stretching them out into the desired shape.

I then gave them a light coat of crafting glue.
I like to do this so that the snowflakes dry hard and keep shape. The crafting glue works great as it not only hardens the yarn, but also dries invisible.

Leave your snowflakes to dry! I left mine overnight to insure that they were totally hard.

Finally add some thread or fishing line through the middle of the top snowflake cluster and hang them everywhere!!!!
I havent yet bought my Christmas tree so I decided to hang them from a branch that I placed in a vase!

Turkey Coasters Crochet Pattern

Pattern adapted from Jennifer Martin’s pattern in Ravelry after being inspired by 178/365 Flower Potholder.

Dimension:
Finished size: Approximate 6 1/2″ (W) x 5 1/2″ (H)
Gauge: not important as long as the yarn label said it is suitable for 2.5mm to 3.5mm hook.

Materials & Tools:
1. Yarn, acrylic baby yarn, 5 – 6 colors.
2. Crochet hook, 3mm
3. Felt – White, Black and Red
4. Sewing thread – White, Black and Red
5. Sewing needle
6. Scissors

Abbreviations:
sl knot = slip knot
st = stitch
slst = slip stitch (to fasten)
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
fo = fasten off
Rnd = round

Crochet Pattern:
Work on right side only, unless stated otherwise.

FRONT
Body
sl knot on hook to begin.
Rnd 1 – ch 4, 14dc into 1st ch, slst to the 4th ch at the beginning rnd. This will give you a total 15 sts in a rnd, counting the 3chs at the beginning rnd as the first 1 dc stitch. (15 sts)
Rnd 2 – ch 3, dc in same st, 2dc in each st around. slst to the 3rd ch at the beginning rnd. fo. (30 sts)
Rnd 3 – New color: ch3, *2dc in next st, dc in next st, repeat * around. slst to the 3rd ch at the beginning round. fo. (45 sts)
Rnd 4 – New color: ch1, sc around. fo. (45 sts)
Tail
Row 1 – New color: ch3, dc in same st, ch1, 2dc in same st, *skip 2 sts, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next st, repeat * until you have made 10 sets. fo.
Row 2 – New color: start at the ch1 space of previous row, ch3, dc in same space, ch1, 2dc in same space, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 space, repeat * until you reach to the end. fo.
Row 3 – New color: start at the ch1 space of previous row, ch3, 2dc in same space, ch1, 3dc in same space, *(3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next ch1 space, repeat * until you reach to the end. fo.
Row 4 – New color: start at the ch1 space of previous row, ch3, ~~5dc~~ 6dc in same space, *~~6dc~~ 7dc in next ch1 space, repeat * until you reach to the end. fo.

BACK
Follow the front pattern with 1 color only.
When making the tail, you can either follow the front pattern by working on right side only, that is fo at every rnd and start at the first ch1 space of previous rnd.
Or,
Turn your piece to the other side to work without have to fo at each rnd. Make 2 to 3 slst at the beginning of each rnd to get to the ch1 space before beginning the first ch3 for the new rnd. Don’t fo and continue with the next step by joining the front and back pieces up.
Hook Loop: Make a loop at the middle of the tail with ch 10 and slst to the last sc.
Weave in all ends to neaten both front and back pieces.

Joining Front & Back
(Sew facial assemblies on the front before joining the front and back piece. Detail on sewing, please read further down.)

The tail outlining and detailing are made while joining both front and back pieces. All stitches must go through both pieces for joining up.

Place the front piece on top of the back piece, with wrong side facing each other. Line up edges.

Side edge of the tail: *1sc (at the corner to the tail and go through both layers), ch 1, repeat * until you reach the body.
Body & feet: sc in next 7 sts, [make foot: ch 2, *ch 2, sc on 2nd ch from hook, slst to 2nd next ch, repeat * 3 times, sc on next st, sc in the same st of last sc before making foot], sc in next 4 sts, repeat make foot, sc in next 6 sts.
Side edge of the tail: *ch 1, 1sc, repeat * until you reach the corner of the tail
Tail outline and joining:
* sc in next 7 sts. sc in between the 2 shells.
Ch 1, sc around the row below (in between the same 2 shells you just did, only on row 7).
Ch 1, sc around row 6.
Ch 1, sc around row 5 (there are 2 skipped sts available, 1 sc into the closest one, ch 1, then sc into the other).
Ch 1, sc around row 6.
Ch 1, sc around row 7.
Ch 1, sc around row 8.

Facial Assembly: Do this before joining the front and back piece.
1. Cut 2 pcs. of 3/4″ diameter of white felts, 2pcs. of 1/2″ diameter of black felts, 3/4″ red beak and 1 1/4″ long snood.
2. Sew on the front of the turkey with respective color thread.

Get ready some fall color yarns, for example shades of brown, orange, yellow, grey and white.
Cut eyes, beak and snood from felt.

Plan the color combo and arrangement or refer to above photos for suggestion.
Slip knot on crochet hook, crochet 4 chains.

Follow crochet pattern above (rnd 1 to rnd 4) to make the turkey body.

Begin to crochet turkey tail by making 10 sets of “2dc,ch1,2dc” for row 1.
Always begin each row from right hand side with right side facing you.

Follow crochet pattern above (row 1 to row 4) to make the turkey tail.

Once the front is done, weave in all ends to neaten.
Sew facial of turkey to the body.

Crochet the back with single color yarn by repeating the front pattern, except that you can choose to either follow exactly, or, turn your piece as you work on the the tail.
Make a 10 chains hook loop at the middle of the last row.

Place the front piece on top of the back piece, with wrong side facing each other. Line up edges.
Crochet along the edge towards the body. Stitches must go through both layers.
Crochet feet.
Crochet towards the turkey tail.

Single crochet 7 stitches on the shell and 1 stitch between the 2 shells.

Crochet 1 chain, then single crochet again between 2 shell on the following row.

Repeat the stitches until you get to the bottom.

Single crochet in the first skip stitches of round 5, chain 1, single crochet on the second skip stitch.
Go up to the top again.

Continue to crochet by repeating the stitches for the rest of the tail details.

Slip stitch and fasten off the yarn when you reach the first stitch of the joining process.
Weave in the end.
Done!

Snowflakes Pattern (in American terms)
Use double strand of DMC Pearl Cotton, size 8, in white. Make a Slip Knot to begin. (1)
Rnd 1:
ch 2 (this first ch is considered as base ring of the snowflakes, the second ch is the beginning st of rnd 1), *12 sc in the first ch, slst to the ch stitch at the beginning of the round. (2)
Rnd 2:
ch3, dc in next stitch, ch5, *skip 1 st, 2dc on next st, ch5, repeat *5 times. slst to the 3rd ch at the beginning of the rnd. (2)
Rnd 3:

Dampen the crochet snowflakes by spraying some water on it or brushing a thin layer of fabric stiffener, adjust the shape and pin it down to an ironing board, leave it dry to block the shape. (13)
Note: Use Martha Stewart Water Resistant Fabric Stiffener if you wish to seal the white snowflakes to protect it from getting stained.

Assembly
Cut hexagon felt, glue the crochet snowflakes on it by using clear quick dry all purpose adhesive. Press them with heavy books for at least 10 minutes. (14 & 15)

Use double strand of DMC Pearl Cotton, size 8, in white.
Make a Slip Knot to begin.

Round 1: ch 2 (this first ch is considered as base ring of the snowflakes, the second ch is the beginning st of rnd 1), *12 sc in the first ch, slst to the ch stitch at the beginning of the round.
Round 2: ch3, dc in next stitch, ch5, *skip 1 st, 2dc on next st, ch5, repeat *5 times. slst to the 3rd ch at the beginning of the rnd.

Round 3: ch 1, *ch9

sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog

ch6

slst in 4th ch from hook, ch7 slst in the prev slst st, ch3 slst in the prev slst st, slst in next 2 sts

2. Mulled Wine Snowflake

Snowflake number two is written up! It's possible that I will say this about all of the snowflakes, but I think this one is my favourite.

My extremely poor photography skills don't do it justice really but the triple picots at the end give it a nice snowflake explosion kind of feel. If you know what I mean. (I'm not actually sure I know what I mean by that.)

The triple picots can be a bit tricky to get the hang of, so I intend to do a little photo guide for the blog soon. If only that pesky work didn't take so much of my crochet time up!

1. All the Trimmings Snowflake

I first came across crochet snowflakes last Christmas and it was love at first sight.

I searched for patterns but couldn't find exactly what I was after, so I decided they were the perfect opportunity to stop chatting about designing, and start designing!

Inevitably, there were a few (many) false starts. But after I'd managed to figure out a couple of simple snowflake-ish designs, it was all systems go.

I've now made ten snowflake designs so far and I will be sharing them with you as I check, tweak and write up the patterns.

I've named them all after my favourite things about Christmas. And as a vegetarian, all the trimmings are definitely way up on that list.

The pattern can be downloaded as a pdf from my Google Drive. It's the first time I'm using this so I hope it works ok!

If there are any problems with the pattern or any questions etc. just let me know and I will try to help.

Materials: Size 10 crochet thread and a size 4 hook (any yarn or hook should work, but will create different sizes)

-Chain 5, slip stitch closed to form a ring

-SC in the ring (this will be the original SC of the current snowflake "petal"), chain 4, work cluster, [chain 5, slip stitch in 5th chain from the hook] 3 times, the last time you slipstitch into the 5th chain from the hook, also put the hook into the same stitch of the first one to connect them together, Chain 4 and slip stitch into the original SC
-Repeat the first step around for each of the 6 "petals" of the snowflake, then slipstitch to the very first SC you ever made in the ring
-finish off
