Stylistic devices

Ellipsis- means leaving out words rather than repeating them unnecessarily
Aposiopesis-the device of suddenly breaking off in speech
Rhetorical question-is one which is asked in order to make a statement rather than to get an answer.
Litotes ironical understatement inwhich an affirmative is expressed by the negative meaning
Apokoinou- asyndetic connection of two clauses in a complex sentence ,where one word has two syntactical functions.
Repetition-the action of repeating something that has already been said or written
Anaphora- the use of a word referringto or replacing a word used earlier in a sentence, to avoid repetition
Epiphora-the repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences
Anadiplosis- repetition in the 1st part of one clauses of an important word or part.
Framing- a repetition in which the opening word or phrase is repeatedat the end of the sentence.
Syntactic tautology- is the use of different words to say the same thing twice in the same statement
Euphony- the quality of beingpleasing to the ear, esp. througha harmonious combination of words
Alliteration-. is the use in speech or writing of several words close together which all begin with the same letter or sound.
Onomatopoeia- imitation of a natural sound.
Rhyme- repetition at a regular intervals, of the same sounds, combination of words.
General literary vocabulary-learned words

Archaisms- words which are no longer used in our speech old-fashioned words
Poetic diction-words which are traditionally used in poetry
Slang- a type of language consisting of words and phrases that are very informal
Jargon-special words or expressions used by a professionor group that are difficult for others to understand
Cant- the language of the underworld,criminals
Vulgarisms- a word or expression that is considered inelegant
Parallelism-specific similarity between two sentences.which are parallel,but may be with different meanings,
Chiasmus- a rhetorical or literary figure in which words, grammatical constructions, or concepts are repeated in reverse order
The climax of something is the most exciting or important moment in it, usually near the end.
Emphatic inversion- word or phrase in an unusual position in the sentence
Detachment-separating sentences ,to makean image or characteristics more expressive.
Oxymoron-a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction
Hyperbole- is a deliberate exagegeration for emotional effect.
Meiosis- the minimization of importance.
Antithesis- denotes a direct contrast between original preposition.
Euphemism- the use of inoffensive expression instead of offensive,
Epithet -an adjective -or phrase expressing a quality characteristic of the person or thing mentioned
Irony- humour which involves saying thingsthat you do not mean.
Antonomasia-the use of a proper name to express a general idea (e.g. a Scrooge for a miser)
Motonymy- changing one word or phrase by another which have connection in their meaning.
