Method:
Cast on 216 stitches. Join in round. Work Diagonal Rib pattern as follows:
Rounds 1 and 2 -- *P3, k3*; repeat from * to * to end of round.
Rounds 3 and 4 -- P2, *k3, p3*, end p1.
Rounds 5 and 6 -- P1, *k3, p3*, end p2.
Note: If you wish to work a deeper ribbed band, you will need to start this pattern
differently in order that the purl stitches remain centered on the purl stitches of the
Hourglass pattern. To add 2 rounds, for example, you would begin the rib k1, *p3, k3*,
end k2.
Begin Hourglass pattern:
(If you are omitting the lower ribbing, work one knit round before proceeding.)
Round 1 -- *K5, p1*; repeat from * to * to end of round.
Round 2 -- *K5, p1*, end last repeat K6 in place of K5, p1.
Round 3 -- *Yo, ssk, p1, k2tog, yo, k1*.
Rounds 4, 5, 6 -- K2, *p1, k5*; repeat from * to * to last 4 sts, end p1, k3.
Round 7 -- *K2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, p1*.
Round 8 -- *K5, p1*.
Repeat Rounds 1 through 8 another 6 times, or as desired. Please note that you ʼll need
to end with a Round 8 before beginning rib.
Begin Diagonal Rib pattern:
Rounds 1 and 2 -- P1, *k3, p3*, end p2.
Rounds 3 and 4 -- *K3, p3*.
Rounds 5 and 6 -- K2, *p3, k3*, end k1.
Cast off in rib pattern.
Block lightly.
Another note: For purposes of swatching, you may wish to work the Hourglass pattern flat. It is written
quite differently:
(Multiple of 6 sts + 1)
Row 1 (RS) -- K6, *p1, k5*, end k1.
Row 2 -- K1, *p5, k1*.
Row 3 -- K1, *yo, ssk, p1, k2tog,yo, k1*.
Row 4 -- K1, p2, *k1, p5*, to last 4 sts; end k1, p2, k1.
Row 5 -- K3, *p1, k5*, end last repeat k3.
Row 6 -- As Row 4.
Row 7 -- K1, *k2tog, yo, k1,yo, ssk, p1*; end last repeat k1 instead of p1.
Row 8 -- As Row 2.
(Isnʼt it kind of me to include this? Stitch pattern from Barbara Walker, A Treasury of Knitting Patterns.)
