Anonymous registrants of 35 websites and domain names are being tracked by U.S. courts for allegedly using the Las Vegas Sands Corp trademark.

 

The websites are called Chinese-language platforms, but LVS added in its complaint that everything is "accessible to U.S. citizens." LVS Chairman Sheldon Adelson is a major opponent of online gambling in the United States.

 

The mark allegedly violated by the Chinese site is the Chinese character of the English name 'Sands' and 'Golden Sand', which corresponds to the Chinese trademark 'Sands'.

 

LVS filed a federal lawsuit in Nevada federal district court on Friday.

 

The company says domain names containing a combination of numbers that Asian gamblers find auspicious have been registered through proxy services. This means that the registrar's physical name, email address, or contact information is not available on the 'WHOIS' system, a protocol that allows access to the domain name registrar's global database.

 

The lawsuit said, "The plaintiff's use of the mark was no accident. [sic] The website is intended to clearly refer to the plaintiff's world-famous resort hotel, as it presents a skyline view of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore."

 

Complaints include. "The Sands mark embodies the considerable goodwill and reputation that Las Vegas Sands Corp and its predecessors have developed since 1952 as a leading provider of entertainment and casino services.
