The Origins of Skid Steers

 

The concept of the skid steer dates back to the mid-20th century. In 1957, the Melroe Manufacturing Company (now known as skidsteer Bobcat Company) introduced the first skid-steer loader. This innovative machine was designed to provide a compact and agile solution for lifting and moving materials in tight spaces. The skid steer quickly gained popularity for its versatility and adaptability.

 

Design and Features

 

One of the key features that sets skid steers apart is their unique steering mechanism. Unlike traditional wheeled vehicles, skid steers do not have a conventional steering system. Instead, they rely on a system that controls the speed and direction of the wheels on each side of the machine independently. By varying the speed of the wheels on one side or the other, skid steers can perform tight turns and pivot on the spot, making them ideal for maneuvering in confined areas.

The lifting capacity of a skid steer varies depending on its size and configuration, with some models capable of lifting several thousand pounds.
