Dawber and Marks were the first to use this noninvasive surface biopsy. A cyanoacrylate polymer is placed on the surface of the skin onto which is firmly placed a clean glass slide for one minute . This, when removed takes with it part of the stratum corneum and some of the follicular contents of the pilosebaceous duct.

The latter is referred to as a follicular cast and was used by Holmes et al, Holland et al and Mills and Kligman to investigate the follicular size and its contents. The follicular biopsy is useful for studying the contents of sebaceous follicles in health and disease and their therapeutic modification..
