Birch connected with Hardy after his fiancee's sister saw Duff on a British talk show talking about her wedding (another milestone she dreamed of doing after being diagnosed with the same rare and aggressive form of cancer that killed her father when she was just eight) and contacted the show to arrange the surprise meeting.
