Hello everyone! Its me PeridottoPuffu, and Im back with one more review before the end of the month! This time Ill be doing a redux review of Sonic R, and I actually considered doing this review a little earlier as a part of Ani-May (because its soundtrack kinda fits the theme), but I ended up doing the Riders Trilogy Versus instead. Now that I have a little time to do another quick redux, I figured now would be a good time to also do Sonic R, so here it is!
...Also, I know what some of you may be thinking, and I swear this will be the last racing game I review for a while. I know this is the fifth (hell, seventh if you count all three Riders games) racing game Ive done on here in the past month and a half, and I didnt even do that on purpose, it just ended up happening that way. Ill be sure to focus on non-racing stuff for the next month or two, but for the last one for a while, heres my redux review of Sonic R!
If you want to check out the original review I did back in 2018 or the footage I recorded for it, you can find them here&

First, we have the story, and Sonic R doesnt really have a story. Everyones racing just cuz. MOVING ON!
Next, we have the gameplay! At first, the game was really hard for me just because the physics made it seem like I was constantly sliding on ice, but after a few races I got the hang of it. Unfortunately, this game doesnt handle sharp corners at all, so turning in those situations always takes longer than it needs to, but thankfully, there arent too many sharp corners in the game, and it really only becomes problematic in one stage, so its not too bad. As for the characters, they all play really well (except Amy) and they have really cool unique abilities to make them stand out (EXCEPT AMY). The characters include Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy (in a crappy car), Eggman (or Robotnik depending on your outlook on life), Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, Mecha Knuckles, Egg Robo, and Super Sonic. Out of the characters, my favorite is Tails Doll, both because I like Tails Doll as a character (cuz you know, Creepypasta :3), and also because I really like his gameplay. Although he cant really handle turning, he can float above water and float in the air for a little while, and its really cool! My second favorite character is Metal Sonic because apart from Super Sonic, Metal Sonic is the OP, and that makes him really fun to play as. And speaking of Super Sonic, Super Sonic is broken as hell (which is why he keeps showing up in every race against me). Also, on the topic of characters, I really like how this game handles its unlockables. To unlock all the characters, you have to find and collect all the medals scattered around the level and then win the race in that level to be able to race against the unlockable character, and winning against them allows you to play as them. There are also Chaos Emeralds that can be found in every level, and finding all of them unlocks the ability to play as Super Sonic. Honestly, I wish more racing games did stuff like this because I think it makes the game a lot more interesting, and it also made unlocking all the characters and 100%-ing the game a lot funner in my opinion. There are also a bunch of side modes outside of the main races such as Time Trials, Reverse Mode, Balloon catch, and Four Player Catch (as well as 2P, but I dont have friends so Im not gonna talk about that one, although Id imagine it would be fun). Of them, my favorite is Reverse Mode where you do the stages backwards, and I think its really fun! My least favorite is Four Player Catch, because when I first played it, I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to do. You have to catch four other people on the map, but they just run around randomly, and theyll occasionally just stop altogether and stand there for a couple minutes, which especially confused me because I had no idea what they were doing. Long story short, it took me about a half an hour to figure out what to do. Hooray.
Next, lets talk about the stages! There are a total of four stages you start out with, and then one extra stage when you get first place in the other four, coming down to a grand total of five (because YAY MATH!). First, theres Resort Island, which is a resort island! Its not too complicated, so its an easy stage). Then theres Radical City, which is awesome! Id say out of them, Radical City is probably my favorite, just cuz I like its music and how its laid out. Then theres Regal Ruin, which although I like its music and scenery, its layout is confusing and hateful towards me, which is why its the one I have a love-hate relationship with. Also, remember when I said that a certain stage cant handle sharp turns? Well, that stage is Regal Ruin, and those turns were the sole reason why when I played it for the first time, it was the one stage I was stuck on for a little while. Next is Reactive Factory, which is full of winding paths and stuff. Other than that, its a fun stage. I often find it a little forgettable cuz there isnt as much for me to talk about. Finally, theres Radiant Emerald, which is my second favorite stage. Although its just an empty road with winding paths, its atmosphere and music makes it AMAZING.
Speaking of Music, lets talk about that, because Sonic Rs soundtrack is AWWWEEEESSSOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEE! Sonic R easily has one of my all time favorite soundtracks ever, and EVERY song in this game is great and makes me want to sing along with them whenever they start. They all also fit the stage theyre in perfectly, and they all kinda remind me of something youd hear in a 90s anime. Also, even though I love all of them, the real star of the show is of course Super Sonic Racing, which is one of the best songs ever made and is also the perfect reward for unlocking everything in this game :3
Next are the visuals, and the whole game looks really nice! Its no secret at this point that I really love low-poly graphics from this time period and Sonic R is no exception, and I especially like the character models cuz they look cute :3 The stages also look really nice, and I also really like the weather effects and different backgrounds for each stage.
And thats pretty much it for my redux review of Sonic R! Honestly, If I had to pick a favorite Sonic racing game, Sonic R I think is the most deserving of that title because outside of maybe its controls, it has aged insanely well over the years and Im always happy whenever I hear its music again. Also, Tails Doll.
