*drawn in January, released in February
If two geniuses were to meet for the first time, how do you think they would react?
A couple months ago, I made a list of characters on an index card that I always wanted to draw, and Dendy from
OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes was one of them. The reason why Dendy was a character I wanted to draw was because of her simple design, and because she reminds me a lot of Lisa from
The Loud House, except not so condescending. Because she reminds me of Lisa, I figured that I make a picture of the two geniuses meeting each other for the first time. For the context of this image, Lisa is surprised to see a kappa, a creature thought to only exist as Japanese folklore, and Dendy is surprised to see a four-year-old have the intellect of some of history's greatest scientists.
When creating the piece, I knew that the overall image was to have Lisa and Dendy surprised to see each other. However, when I created the image, it felt pretty empty, and I knew that a simple colored background really wouldn't make it stand out. After many attempts at trying to make the image pop, I came up with the perfect way to create the background. Because the main setting of
OK K.O.! is a convenience store, I decided to use a panoramic image of the mercado's shelves from
The Casagrandes as the background. This was done for three reasons: 1) I couldn't find any images Flip's Food and Fuel that was to my desire, 2) the image was big enough to resize to that the characters look true to their heights (I mean, when I uploaded the image to Photoshop, the characters were as tall as the isle), and 3) it would add in emphasis to show that this was a
Loud House themed image.
Speaking of the third reason, now that I had a
Loud House themed background, I needed to figure out how to add in another detail to balance out both shows - as I had two references to
Loud House (Lisa and the mercado backdrop), but only one for
OK K.O.! (Dendy). After some more thinking, I decided to model the image after the show's title cards. I found on a Tumblr post an artist who made free-to-use transparencies of the title card template, and decided to incorporate it into my picture. Because the characters are layered in a way that their feel are behind the border, but their heads are over it, I got around that issue by selecting the characters, and using the eraser on the template layer to erase the parts that are over the characters. One last thing to give this image were the layers of purple. Because purple is a major color in the show, added in two layers of purple. For the first one, I used a dark shade of purple, erased what was inside the template, and gave it a light opacity. For the second layer, I used a light shade of purple, erased was was outside the template, and gave it a higher opacity. In the end, the picture is now a balance between
The Loud House and
OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes.
One more thing. When I drew the characters, I was originally going to draw Dendy without the beret she starts wearing in the later seasons. However, the more I thought about it, she just didn't look the same without it, considering the reason why she started wearing it. I also thought it would be a perfect reflection to Lisa's hair, as it looks identical to that part in the back that's sticking up.
Hope you enjoyed this little crossover, and I can't wait to see which character from my list I decide to draw next.
