Aarau, the capital of the canton of Aargau in the Swiss region of Mittelland, is located on the banks of the Aare River, from which the city and canton owe their name. With a charming old town, Aarau boasts the most beautiful eaves, the so-called Dachhimmel of Switzerland, which date mainly from the 16th century when the city underwent considerable expansion, and are a special feature of the old town of Aarau. It is for this reason that Aarau is known as the city of beautiful gables.
