The subject of the sculpture is a wooden stick called pirka or pulka, which was used like a receipt. The value or quantity of the goods was marked with notches on the kapula, the kapula was split in half, and each party to the transaction was left with its own half. Sori Aukio was built in the 1980s, and sculptor Harry Kivij"arvi was responsible for its artistic composition. In the square is his 10 meter high work Pirkka. Kivij"arvi has also designed the area's lamps, benches and trash cans, as well as the mosaic-decorated water basin located in the north corner of the square. The work was completed in the fall of 1987.
