The Palace of the National Congress, is the building built to house the National Congress of Brazil, opened in 1960. It was designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, with structural design by the engineer Joaquim Cardozo. It is one of the three monumental buildings that define the Praca dos Tr^es Poderes, the others being the Planalto Palace and the Supreme Federal Court, also designed by Niemeyer and Cardozo. It is considered as the greatest symbol of the capital of Brazil, in addition to being frequently referred to as the icon of the country itself, abroad. On a horizontal platform block there is a semi-sphere on the left (seat of the Senate), a hemisphere on the right (seat of the Chamber of Deputies) and, between the two, twin office towers (the so-called "Annex 1"), that rise to a hundred meters high. The congress also occupies other neighboring buildings, some of which are interconnected by a tunnel. The building is located in continuity with the Eixo Monumental, the main avenue in the Brazilian capital, as designed by L'ucio Costa. In front of it is a large lawn, used by the population as a stage for demonstrations, protests and other public demonstrations. At the rear of the building is the Praca dos Tr^es Poderes.
