The lower part of the tower, as well as the entire arch and passage tunnel, have all the expression of a Romanesque building from the 12th century. The bridge in its primitive one-story tower structure worked with the barrier or toll tax. Documents from 1315 and 1318 determine the mandatory crossing of the bridge and the respective payment, a practice that only came to be abolished during the reign of King Manuel I, in 1504.
