Piazza Santa Maria Novella is one of the most beautiful squares in Florence and is characterized by: the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella with the facade finished by Leon Battista Alberti in 1470; from the loggia of the San Paolo hospital with a portico inspired by Brunelleschi's Spedale degli Innocenti; from characteristic Florentine palaces such as the Pitti-Broccardi Palace; two marble obelisks from Seravezza. The marble facade of the basilica is among the most important works of the Renaissance. The facade before Alberti's project was bare like many other Florentine churches (San Lorenzo, Santa Maria del Fiore).
