Is Bottled Water The Untapped Brain Food?
- By: Melanie
Bottled water may be touted as the untapped brain food of the century, but the brain needs more than just water to function. Good brain function is dependent on a healthy balanced diet such as adequate protein and plenty of oxygen, as well as plenty of clean, pure water for hydration. So if we are deficient in any of these three keys, it will have some effect on our brains, but water may be the most important thing to keep up to it.
What kind of water is best for our brain? Water in its purest form is always the best, and bottled water is certainly purer than tap water. Tap water has many nasty toxins in it, which is why chlorine needs to be added. While that is yet another chemical, it does kill germs and the quantities that are added to water are said to have no adverse effect on us.
But if you want to be absolutely sure of drinking only the purest water, then bottled water is probably the way to go. 83% of our blood is made up of water, and it is, of course blood that transports to our brains all the elements needed for optimal health. Studies have shown that a person who is even only mildly dehydrated will not be as alert mentally nor be able to concentrate as well as a person who is not.
While thirst is the best indicator of whether we need to drink or not, many people go for hours without drinking even though they feel thirsty. It may be that they are simply too busy to stop and drink, or no water available where they are. Or they may get so used to that feeling of thirst that they ignore it. Very often we depend on coffee or tea to quench our thirst, but anything with caffeine in it acts as a diuretic and so forces our bodies to expel water, rather than conserve it.
So the next time you feel thirsty - or tired - stop and drink a big glass of plain water and see if that makes any difference to your alertness. Experts tell us that drinking water will certainly make us more alert, so for those times that we need to be most ‘awake’ such as just before exams, when we are studying or when we need to do something that takes lots of concentration, drinking bottled water may just give you that extra edge. It will also help you to get the most out of your day.

Pure water is one of the most beneficial ingredients that anyone can drink. Not only is it good for us, it is a great deal cheaper than most other drinks. So why don’t we drink more of it? The main reason we partake of any drink is because we like the taste of it. The trouble with lots of tap water is that it tastes horrible. The addition of chlorine to kill all those nasty germs has changed the taste of pure water. Besides, it’s not pure anymore.
Of course we can buy bottled water and that is certainly pure. It comes from underground water supplies that have been well filtered by Mother Earth and kept from contamination due to its location - or so we are told. But if you are going to use it for all your drinking needs that will cost a great deal. That must be considered in these days of economic gloom and doom. Then there is the sheer size and weight of all that bottled water that must be purchased at the store and brought home every week.
Not only do you need somewhere to store it, you have to dispose of the plastic bottles afterwards. Which brings us to two other questions. Is it safe to drink water out of plastic, or are some of those cancer-causing agents in the plastic leaching into the water before we drink it? And how about the cost to the environment of making all those plastic bottles in the first place - and the added cost of disposing of them properly. So what can we do?
It is possible to make your own pure water by buying a filtering outfit. Whether this is simply a small jug with a special filter in it, or whether it is a larger unit that fits on the tap will be up to each individual. Most filters work quite well and take out lots of the stuff that causes our tap water to taste and smell foul. Some filters take out the bad and leave in the good, such as fluorine, so our teeth will still benefit. All improve the taste of our tap water so that we will be far more likely to drink it.
So while bottled water might be good if you are caught out on a hot day without any, the benefits of having your own personal supply of filtered water far outweigh buying bottled water.
Pure water is one of the most beneficial ingredients that anyone can drink. Not only is it good for us, it is a great deal cheaper than most other drinks. So why don’t we drink more of it? The main reason we partake of any drink is because we like the taste of it.
