If you’re staying a few nights in the city and need a cheap place to sleep, here are our recommendations for the best hostels in San Jose. Amor de Mar is a nine room hotel just outside town and directly across from the river that leads to the Montezuma Waterfalls. They also have two villas that offer a kitchen, A/C, and a private porch. The property faces the ocean and has several comfortable areas for lounging and taking in the view. Rooms are rustic but nice and most have private verandas.
We shook our hips here with with the town drunk who was shirtless with his liquor bottle sagging down his pants. Delicious salads with tofu and spirulina, vegan homemade gelato, and a lovely breakfast. Rooms and communal areas are clean and beautifully decorated. Guests tend to be more mature rather than young backpackers. And danced to electro beats on the beach under the starry night sky. I recall climbing to a nearby beach and perching on a large rock. The scene should have been beautiful, but instead, in search of privacy from my friends, I sat and cried.
