In the hands of an experienced photographer with excellent equipment photography is a most valuable means of assessing acne grade, but not all dermatologists have these advantages. There are, moreover, drawbacks to photography whatever the standard of the equipment and operator. Constant light and distance between patient and camera are essential.

The same batch of film, developed by a standardized procedure, must be used in any one study. It has to be remembered that photographs will never adequately detect the small noninflamed lesions which are important aetiologically and obviously the depth of the lesions cannot always be fully appreciated..
