New York City’s Brooklyn abruptly stopped running

The historic 97-year-old wooden roller coaster stopped during a run with amusement riders aboard. Several people were helped off the coaster after it was deliberately stopped while making an ascent.
 
Luna Park, the corporate entity that operates the largest amusement park in New York City, said the Cyclone was disabled after a damaged chain sprocket in the ride’s motor room was detected. The event resulted in riders being assisted in walking down the tracks.
 
At Luna Park in Coney Island, safety is our number one priority. Thorough testing happens daily before Luna Park opens and throughout the day as necessary,” Luna Park officials said. “The Coney Island Cyclone is a 97-year-old roller coaster that is meticulously maintained and tested daily.”
 
The NYC Department of Buildings issued Luna Park code violations for failing to maintain the ride and not notifying the city agency promptly about the Cyclone’s issues.
 
The Cyclone is three blocks east of where a consortium of gaming entities wants to build an integrated resort casino called The Coney. The group is one of 10 bidders seeking to acquire one of the three downstate casino licenses the New York Gaming Facility Location Board is expected to issue before Dec. 1, 2025.
 
Casino Seeks to Bring New Life to Coney Island 
Coney Island has seen better days. Once a popular seaside resort town for Manhattanites, Coney Island’s appeal peaked during the first half of the 20th Century. Now, it’s perhaps best known for its annual hosting of the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4.
 
Numerous revitalization efforts over the decades have largely failed to bring economic prosperity to the neighborhood on Brooklyn’s southern end along the Lower New York Bay. Today, one in four Coney Island households live in poverty and the median household income is just $44,800.
 
The Coney, a proposed $3 billion undertaking from Saratoga Casino Holdings, the Chickasaw Nation’s Global Gaming Solutions, Legends Hospitality Group, and Thor Equities, says the casino resort would bring new life to the area, give a new reason for visitors to visit, and create thousands of good-paying, full-time, year-round jobs.
 
Coney Island’s unemployment rate of roughly 10% would be reduced, and the casino consortium says it’s committed to becoming a community partner by supporting local businesses by allowing rewards members to redeem points at neighboring restaurants and shops. The development group has also pledged to invest in infrastructure to ease congestion and work with NYC’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority to establish express subway service and expand ferry routes to and from Coney Island.  동행복권파워볼
 
Local Opposition 
Despite The Coney’s economic and community upgrade pledges, Community Board 13, which represents Coney Island in an advisory role on land use and zoning issues within the New York City government, opposes the $3 billion investment. In May 2023, Community Board 13 passed a resolution formally opposing the casino by a 23-8 vote.
 
Board members cited typical concerns associated with gaming developments, including the possibility of increased crime and other societal drains like problem gambling and bankruptcies. CB13 Chair Lucy Mujica Diaz also questioned whether The Coney’s jobs would pay too much and result in some community members losing their housing subsidies and rent vouchers.

Should slot machines and table games come to the Southeast Asia nation that’s home to nearly 66 million people, new research formulated by a special House committee reported this week that the overwhelming majority of patrons would likely be Thai people.
 
The committee chaired by Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat reported to the cabinet that about 90% of casino guests would presumably be domestic residents.
 
The study used data analytics based on Macau, the Chinese Special Administrative Region where six casino operators report that about 90% of its patron traffic comes from local residents and people from the mainland. Using those gauges, the Thai House committee concluded that a similar forecast should be expected in its own casino resorts.
 
Local Focus
The study committee assumed that about 10% of the Thai population aged 18 to 75 who are not national welfare cardholders and therefore, would qualify to patronize a casino, would do so. That would equate to about 3.7 million people.
 
With Thailand attracting roughly 11 million foreigners a year, and the committee assuming that 10% of that population would be willing to gamble — or 1.1 million travelers — the report resolved that the possible casino customer base would total around 4.8 million people.
 
The committee believes its estimate is conservative, as global gaming industry research has concluded that about a quarter of adults gamble worldwide. Gambling has also historically been more a part of Asian cultures than in other parts of the world.
 
Gambling in Thailand is currently limited to horse racing wagering and the state-run lottery. However, illicit gambling like underground casinos and sports betting rings is rampant throughout Thailand.
 
Newly minted Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who assumed the office earlier this month after Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin resigned, is carrying on Srettha’s belief that regulated casinos would eradicate underground gambling, provide an economic and tax boost to Thailand, and increase tourism.
 
Srettha resigned effective August 14 amid political pressure for hiring Pichit Chuenban to work in his office. Pichit served jail time for attempting to bribe Supreme Court officials in 2008.
 
Casino Details
Paetongtarn’s Entertainment Complex Policy Committee will determine the precise regulations that will govern casinos in Thailand should the Senate vote to authorize an initial allotment of up to five resorts.

DC to delay hearings regarding legislation that would give two federally recognized Native American groups gaming rights in the Lone Star State.

HR 759 – the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and Alabama-Coushatta Tribes of Texas Equal and Fair Opportunity Settlement Act – passed the US House of Representatives in July. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas), seeks to give the two tribes full rights under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) of 1988.
 
The two tribes have been targeted by officials in Texas over their gaming privileges.
 
“Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton have concerns with this legislation because current federal law prohibits gambling on tribal lands unless authorized by the State of Texas,” Cornyn wrote the US Senate Indian Affairs Committee. All three state officials he mentioned are Republicans.
 
Under Texas law, most forms of gambling are prohibited, including on Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and Alabama-Coushatta tribal lands,” Texas’ senior Senator added.
 
Cornyn requested, “In light of these legal and policy disagreements between the Texas state government and these tribes, I request any committee hearings concerning this legislation be postponed until these parties have reached a resolution or agreement.”
 
Legal Backstory
The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas has been operating a Class II gaming facility in Livingston since May 2016. Paxton argues it’s in violation of state law, and has imposed a $10,000 per day penalty on the tribe – an amount that is now upwards of $12.4 million.
 
Here’s where the controversy stems: in August 1987, the two tribes agreed to Congress’ Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and Alabama-Coushatta Indian Tribes of Texas Restoration Act. The bill restored their federal recognition and sovereignty, but provided that: “All gaming activities which are prohibited by the laws of the State of Texas are hereby prohibited on the reservation and on lands of the tribe.”
 
A year later, IGRA was passed and gave all federally recognized tribes the right to operate Class I and II gaming on their sovereign land. Class III gaming – full-scale casinos with slot machines and table games – requires state approval through a gaming compact.
 
Texas’ only other federally recognized tribe – the Kickapoo Traditional Native Americans – were recognized in 1985, but were not bound with a no-gaming clause. The tribe has operated the Class II Lucky Eagle Casino for more than two decades.

FanDuel already has a presence in the Hoosier State, as it opened two retail sportsbooks last month. According to the IGC’s order, the mobile application will fall under the license awarded to the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City near the Michigan state line. The company also runs a retail establishment at the Belterra Casino Resort in the southern part of the state, roughly midway between Louisville, Ky., and Cincinnati. Both casinos are owned and operated by Boyd Gaming.
 
When it becomes available, Indiana will be the fourth state where the sports technology company offers online gaming, and the third implementation of it in as many months. Nearly two months ago, it launched in West Virginia. A month before that, it opened in Pennsylvania.
 
FanDuel’s King: Committed to Users
FanDuel is currently the top online sportsbook in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. At last week’s Global Gaming Expo (G2E), CEO Matt King discussed some of the steps the company took to become the mobile sports betting app of choice in its top two markets.

While FanDuel will be the latest, it certainly won’t be the last. The Tour is now amid its Asian Swing, and is in Japan this week for the inaugural ZOZO Championship. Japan is in the process of legalizing commercial gambling, with bids being accepted for a proposed three integrated casino resorts.
 
Talking with the AFP news agency, Monahan said the PGA Tour is embracing sports betting in an effort to increase engagement and bring new fans to the sport.
 
It’s all about engagement,” Monahan explained. “When done right, it gives fans the opportunity to engage with your sport over a longer period of time and have more interest in what’s happening across the entire player field.”
 
Tiger Woods is leading the field after round one of the ZOZO. He’s tied at -6 with Gary Woodland. But local fan-favorite Hideki Matsuyama sits one back, and has the shortest odds in Las Vegas of winning the tournament at 3/1. Woods and Woodland are at 4/1.
 
Golf and Sports Betting
There are concerns among the golf world that betting on the game will lead to rowdier fans. The game known for its calm “golf clap” has become more boisterous in recent years, spectators annoyingly yelling “mashed potatoes” and other random comments as players tee off.
 
Some players have recently teed off on those rowdy patrons.
 
“What is going to happen is you will see more of this heckling stuff occurring because there are going to be those who have bet against you,” world No. 2 Rory McIlroy opined in August. “They’re going to want to try and alter the result because they will potentially either make or lose money from it.”

Integrity Paramount
Monahan didn’t reveal specifics as to how the PGA Tour’s gambling product might operate. But he maintained that it will come with safeguards that will only better protect the game’s integrity.
 
We’ve put the right systems in place, both in terms of an integrity program and monitoring activity,” the commissioner stated. “I think when we come forward, you’ll see that we’ve taken significant steps to address that.”
 
Last month, IMG Arena – a sports information technology company headquartered in London – reached an exclusive deal with the PGA Tour to obtain its official real-time data. The arrangement includes ShotLink data, the Tour’s proprietary platform that collects and disseminates scoring and statistical data on every shot by every player.
 
Las Vegas-based Scientific Games has already signed on to buy the feed from IMG Arena. Scientific plans to circulate the golf data to its sports betting partners, including William Hill, Caesars, and Paddy Power Betfair.

Houston pitcher Jose Urquidy struck out four and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings, and Alex Bregman went 3-for-5 with a grand slam to lead the visiting Astros to an 8-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night.
 
After losing the first two games at home, the Astros have now made this a best-of-three series. On Sunday night for Game 5 at Nationals Park, Gerrit Cole will take the mound for Houston against Max Scherzer. It’s a rematch of Game 1 that saw the Nationals get to Cole for five runs and hand him his first loss since May.
 
Houston’s ace, who is 19-1 with a 1.79 ERA in his last 26 starts, is hoping to redeem himself.
 
I hope I go home with nothing left in the tank,” Cole told reporters Saturday. “Whether tomorrow is the last time I pitch or I get the opportunity to pitch another time after that, I just hope that I’m just absolutely dog-tired by the time I get home.”
 
Cole-Scherzer II will be one of two strong pitching matchups looming in the next two games. On Tuesday, when the Series reverts to Houston, the Nationals Stephen Strasburg will go up against Justin Verlander, a rematch of Game 2.
 
With the road teams winning the first four games, it marked the first time that’s happened since 1996.
 
Game 5 is set to start at 8:07 pm ET and will be televised on FOX. President Donald Trump is expected to attend the game.
 
Oddsmakers Backing Houston Sunday
Despite being the home team – or perhaps maybe because they’re the home team – the Nats find themselves back to being underdogs in Game 5. That’s the same place they started the World Series.
 
Houston with Cole is the -150 moneyline favorite at DraftKings to take a 3-2 lead back to Houston. Washington with Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who struck out 243 batters in just 172-1/3 innings this season, is offered at +132. As 1.5-run favorites, the Astros odds are +117, while the Nationals are -136 in getting the runs.
 
The over/under is seven runs, with the over currently priced at -107 and the under at -114. Only one of the games has seen less than seven runs scored.
 
FanDuel’s odds are similarly priced, with the moneyline -150/+130. The 1.5-run run line is +118 for Houston to -140 for the Nationals. The seven-run over/under is even money for over and -122 for the under.
 
Series Odds Come Full Circle
Houston started the World Series as the heaviest favorite in 12 years. However, after the Nats took the first two games, oddsmakers reversed course. 홀짝게임
 
Now, they’ve reversed the reverse.
 
FanDuel opened the Series with Houston as -240 favorites. Now after the last two wins, it’s made the Astros the -270 favorite. Washington’s odds, meanwhile, are +215 to win two of the last three games.
 
DraftKings is offering the ‘Stros at -250 and the Nationals at +200.
 
Both books believe Houston will win the next two games. In betting on the exact series outcome, FanDuel is offering +115 odds for Houston to win in six games. DraftKings offers +130 for the same outcome.
 
Those who think the Nats can win in six can get +575 odds at DraftKings and +600 at FanDuel. A seven-game series win for Houston is +210 (DraftKings) and +230 (FanDuel), while a Washington seven-gamer is +430 and +370, respectively.
