We take the long route down the other side of the park towards Tamsui and drive through that city including its old streets to the Tamsui Fishermans Wharf. This whole area appears to have had 伴手禮 台東 its heyday 20 years ago, parts are now abandoned and you get the impression it’s all in decline. We lunch at a restaurant on the wharf, cross Lovers Bridge, take plenty of pics and drive on.
I'll be traveling on my own, so might be too scary/too expensive to consider driving? (I have no idea what the traffic is like – is it crazy like China, or manageable like Australia? In Asia, the only place I have driven a hire car is Japan). We got a ride from Taipei via the west coast through Hualien then onwards to Pingtung, the rail to Kaohsuing and train back up from Kaohsuing to Taipei. Most signs in dual language, a lot of people either know English, or have a basic command of it. My bro headed to beijing for one week; and most shopping centres had basic commands of english.
Deviated from our route to Hualien county, Ruisui Township only once to marvel at the Taroko Gorge and National Park. Visitor headquarters in the park were closed so we pushed on through the gorge. The gorge was created from erosion by the river against the constantly elevating land combined with the heavy sub-tropical rains. Marble, which is relatively hard and resistant to erosion, nevertheless relented to these forces resulting in the unusually steep and narrow canyons. 6KAOHSIUNG-KENTING-TAITUNG (B/D)The highlight today is a visit to Kenting National Park, Taiwan’s first nationally recognised park and undoubtedly one of the most spectacular landscapes you will see. Be awestruck by the vastness of the natural reserve and stand on the most southern tip of the island at Maopitou. Don’t miss the Eluanbi Lighthouse, also known as ‘The Light of East Asia’ as its light intensity is one of the most powerful along the Taiwan coast. This afternoon, head to Kenting Main Street, the heart of the area and bustling with locals, tourists, and vendors. Spend lunch time discovering the numerous stalls offering a range of local snacks and restaurants offering a variety of cuisines.
Taiwan is one of my favourite countries in Asia, there is so much to see and do yet it remains under marketed and relatively cheap. It also has natural beauty as well as significant history. Only drawback is that winter sees more rain, especially on the East Coast which sadly is very scenic. Yea they might be kinda similar but it's not going to be exactly like that style probably smaller as well but yea check those out and you can see what you think. Probably the first one i mentioned is the one that most people would go for. The other two i didn't mention were Janfusun Fancyworld Theme Park and E-DA World.
The expiry date is only a month away, they need six months in event of problems with tickets. Was reading about it, and sounds like an interesting place to walk around. I'm still trying to work out where to go in Kaohsiung, as the main attraction seems to be Dragon Tiger Pagoda. Still working out what to buy as well that is unique to Kaohsiung .

Only hiccup today came as we travelled into Taipeh’s Sonshan and got within a stone’s throw of it before realising we had pinpointed the wrong airport and it should have been Taoyuan. Overshot by about 50kms adding 100kms to our travel at the end of the day! Anyway we survived it all otherwise without incident and are happy to be home about midday 17th.
As other people have mentioned, follow the crowd because there are differences when both stalls sell the same thing and one has no customers. Not too sure as i didn't really go to Taiwan for that, but the night markets are busy. But the landscape or cityscape was to me a bit monochrome...as in it's all a kind of reddish or plain colour and if the sky is cloudy then it all becomes a bit greyish.
The mall an up market shopping centre on about 5 floors, every shop an international brand. We don’t even bother to poke our nose in, we are far too tight for this kinda shopping. MRT – cheap and easy to use and therefore crowded, at peak hour I am reminded of sardines in a tin can.
