Dementia |
Dementia is a deterioration of mental condition. Hospice care is available and highly encouraged for individuals with late-stage dementia and includes strategies like comfort feeding, assessing and easing the pain, mouth care, engaging in pleasurable activities like music or soothing touch, and managing uncomfortable symptoms.
The term precocious dementia for a mental illness suggested that a type of mental illness like schizophrenia (including paranoia and decreased cognitive capacity) could be expected to arrive normally in all persons with greater age (see paraphrenia ). After about 1920, the beginning use of dementia for what is now understood as schizophrenia and senile dementia helped limit the word's meaning to "permanent, irreversible mental deterioration".
During the 19th century, doctors generally came to believe that dementia in the elderly was the result of cerebral atherosclerosis , although opinions fluctuated between the idea that it was due to blockage of the major arteries supplying the brain or small strokes within the vessels of the cerebral cortex.
While the underlying biology of Alzheimer's is still not fully understood, one telltale sign is the presence of sticky proteins called amyloid plaques that form clumps in the brains of patients, causing neurons to die and resulting in irreversible brain damage.
My recommendation is that you should avoid trans fats and saturated fats as much as possible (as these have been shown to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease especially amongst those with a genetic predisposition to the condition) and use olive oil where ever possible.
Non-medical interventions such as cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) can help people with mild to moderate 치매 maintain mental functioning, and alternative therapies such as music therapy, aromatherapy and reminiscence therapy can be of benefit too.
Rather than assuming a change, or any worsening,” is being caused by the natural” deterioration of the dementia, caregivers must be aware that any sudden change in cognition, function and behaviour is a clue that something medical might be happening.
159 The United Kingdom DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) states that people with dementia who specifically have poor short term memory, disorientation, or lack of insight or judgment are not fit to drive, and in these instances the DVLA must be informed so that the driving licence can be revoked.
The "Mediterranean" style diet (The Mediterranean diet is abundant in virgin olive oil, high quantities of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, fish and wholegrain pulses and cereals) as it is known has been shown to be of benefit in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's and dementia in general.
Eating a healthy diet is important for many reasons, but a diet such as the Mediterranean diet — rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and omega-3 fatty acids, which are commonly found in certain fish and nuts — might promote health and lower your risk of developing dementia.
The same type of stigmatization has occurred with dementia as our society ages and more Americans experience severe cognitive decline We want to be supportive of these unfortunate folks — many of whom are our neighbors, colleagues and acquaintances — but are fearful we may one day suffer their scourge.
