"...And I think, there’s no place more beautiful than night Sliema. If you’ve ever seen this clear night sky, full of shiny big stars it’ll be difficult to forget Malta.(see the photo on the first main page) So, do you like to go out at night? You are welcome! Sliema is full of different clubs, bars where disco takes place every night. Genres of music are various, so any student or tourist will be satisfied.
I will remember this trip all my life. Because it’s so wonderful to be an international student and be sent to Malta for studying!"

Malta, The unforgettable land: My summer experience 2008

St.Julians, Malta

Sliema, Malta
Made by Dubtsov Sergey, 10 «Б», 2008.

Malta is a little island country located in the Mediterranean Sea. The country consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Komino. Its total area is nearly 316 square kilometers. We can imagine: the width of the main island is smaller than the diameter of Moscow.

You can cross the land by walking for couple hours. The capital is Valetta.  Total population of Malta is 400000. One specialty is that this country has two national languages which are Maltese (the main one) and English. Malta is a member of European Union and has two kinds of currency: Euro and Maltese lira. The main nationality is Maltese (95%). As most European countries the main religion is catholic. Nowadays the country has some serious problems. The disposition between Europe and Africa provokes the influx of illegal immigrants from countries like Morocco, Egypt and Libya. But sensible politics of Maltese government arranges this problem easily. They just deport illegal foreigners.

A citizen has a high total month income which rates somewhere between 10 to15 thousand of US dollars. So, even the poorest family can buy any new brand of electronics or fashion clothes. That’s why there’s almost no crimes in Malta. When a citizen has means to buy everything he wants there’s no need to steal the things. It’s safe to walk around the city even at midnight with expensive smart phone like iPod.

Valetta and any other Maltese city where I have visited have some specialties which you can notice. For example, you should be aware of the traffic because there’s right-hand type of driving. Maltese people like to buy compact cars to thrust their way through narrow streets. Most of cars are very old but that’s just a matter of taste. Citizens like to buy rare and exclusive cars, especially from 70’s. I’ve even seen Russian brands of cars such as Lada. But that can be an influence of Russia to Maltese culture.

However, Malta is full of Russians! You can meet them anywhere in the streets. Most of them are international students and just tourists but a part of them consists of former citizens. Statistics says that there’s s high percent of registered marriages per year where the second spouse is from Russia.
Now I would like to describe Maltese nature, climate and landscapes. Most parts of the relief consist of yellow stone which looks like limestone, but it’s much sturdy. All the buildings are built using this type of natural material because there are no forests. If you go out of the city you’ll see desert-like panorama with rocky cliffs on seashores and stony valleys all around the island. There are two or three sandy beaches, the others are rocky.

The countryside is full of desert bushes and other vegetation which is belonged to desert climate. And some words about the climate. The highest temperature, I’ve ever suffered there was forty-five degrees above zero. The average temperature is usually nearly thirty degrees above zero. This heat lasts all day long. But Maltese citizens don’t use conditioning-systems in high amounts. They got used to such conditions. So, every guest has to get used to this excessive heat. Evenings are a bit cooler. If you decide to go to the beach, you must buy sun-protection lotion or the sun will burn your skin. That’s awful feeling, you know.

If you visit a beautiful sister-island of Gozo, you’ll see former capital of Malta, Rabat. This city is full of castles and other places of interest. To reach the island, you should take a ferry which route goes between two islands. The fare is nearly five euros, but you can use your ticket two times.

And I think, there’s no place more beautiful than night Sliema.
Because it’s so wonderful to be an international student and be sent to Malta for studying!
