The Arctic Ocean is unusual in that its layers are created by salinity instead of temperature. Rivers flowing into the ocean and melting sea ice create a surface layer of cold, but very fresh, water. When warm, salty Pacific waters move in, they dive beneath, creating eddies. pic.twitter.com/6D147apeaY
