But in case your outcomes aren’t what you had hoped, don’t despair. They are not the be-all and finish-all, as these 4 girls show. They all struggled with exams yet found success in the enterprise world by way of arduous work.
CLARE O’REILLY and LOUISA GREGSON learn how they did it. JODINE BOOTHBY created teething mitten Gummee Glove, which is now offered in more than 20 countries. Jodine, 38, had 27 jobs in lower than a decade, earlier than beginning her business empire. She lives with companion Steve, 41, son Jimmy, seven, and daughter Charlie, 5, in Calstock, Cornwall.
She says: I bought my first half-time job as a Saturday girl at a hairdressers when I was 15. I struggled with confidence at college and quite than say I didn’t perceive something, I’d muddle via pretending. Once i acquired my GCSE ends in 1995, I acquired a few Ds and the remainder had been Fs and Us.
My mother and father needed to plead with the varsity to let me stay on for an NVQ in business, which I also failed. I began a journey and tourism course the next year however dropped out after six months. Aged 19, I began working for a financial institution in the cheque-processing centre and from there had jobs in pubs, at a food preparation wholesaler, fruit picking and as a chambermaid. I had no duties so it didn’t matter that I flitted from job to job. I bought a job crimping pasties on a factory manufacturing line and liked it but in 2011 after i went on maternity go away, I wished a job that let me be house with Jimmy.
That’s once i came up with the idea for Gummee Glove, which helps with babies’ teething. I made trial ones which I gave to buddies after ploughing what little savings we had into it, borrowing cash from family and selling jewellery. That was seven years in the past and we now flip over £500,000 a 12 months.
I didn’t anticipate the success and whereas it’s been a tricky seven years - with numerous arduous work and a number of sleepless nights - I’ve shocked myself in so many ways. I believed I was dangerous at studying but I’ve taught myself web design, marketing and social media management. I remember the disappointment of my exam results. But my advice could be to stop, take inventory and realise there are other paths to success than academia. VIKKI THOMAS, 44, from Hereford, left faculty at 15 with one GCSE, but now owns or half-owns 5 corporations, having started them from scratch.
She says: My dad and mom bought divorced when I used to be in secondary faculty and i ended up dwelling alone at 16. I went to catering school and labored in hotels, however the unsociable hours made me need a change. Regardless of having just one GCSE, I got a job as an operations manager for a national contract cleaning firm.
I ultimately grew to become chargeable for greater than 500 staff. I had my son James in 2001 and went back after maternity leave, but when i had Alisha in 2003 I decided I needed to do something for myself to secure my family’s future . I borrowed sufficient money to spend money on a small property, do it up and rent it out.
Inside the following few years my property portfolio grew. I used to be then accepted as a mature student to do a level in Industrial Property Administration at Bristol College. It was an hour and a half commute for lectures, which was powerful combining it with the college runs, but I received a first-class honours and trained as a chartered surveyor. Having juggled it all with young children and a husband in the Military serving in Afghanistan I grew to become extra serious about private development.
