Many travellers find road trips as attractive as discovering new places. Moving from one corner of the world to another sometimes is more interesting than the destination itself. Pan American Highway (USA)
The Pan American Highway, encompassing the entire US interstate highway system, is the leader among the world's longest roads. Its length is approximately 48,000 km. The Pan American Highway, comprised of interconnecting roads, is the longest in the world. It connects more than 20 countries in the American continents. The highway stretches from Buenos Aires in South America to Edmonton in North America.
Highway 1 (Australia)
Highway 1 is the world’s second longest road. It covers 14,500 km and consists of interconnecting roads. Highway 1 includes both single and multilane roads, connecting all Australian states, except Brisbane and Darwin. The construction of the highway started in 1955 and the road was renovated in 1959, 1974 and 1998. Road traffic is more than a million people a day.
Trans-Siberian Highway
The Trans-Siberian Highway is the 3rd longest road in the world. Its length is 11,000 km. The highway section from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok in Russia together with the Asian Highway Network is called the AH6. The road comprises 7 federal highways, coinciding with European Route E30 and passing through Kazakhstan. Its longest section is Russian route M58 or the Amur Highway which stretches up to 2,100 km from Chita to Khabarovsk.
Trans-Canada Highway (Canada)
The Trans-Canada Highway’s length is approximately 8,000 km. It is the 4th longest road in the world. The highway’s construction started in 1950 and finished by 1962. A number of construction works continued until 1971. The highway stretches from Victoria in British Columbia to St. John’s City in Newfoundland and touches Labrador. The Trans-Canada Highway passes through all 10 Canadian provinces and connects the main cities of the country.
Golden Quadrilateral Highway Network (India)
The largest Indian highway is ranked 5th on the list. Consisting of a highway network, it connects four main cities in India - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Its construction started in 2001 and finished in 2012. The road has 4 to 6 lines. Investments in the project was $9.2bn. The highway consists of 4 sections and has record high traffic.
China National Highway 010 (China)
The China National Highway 010 is also known as Tongsan Expressway. It is the longest highway in the country, stretching for 5,700 km. The highway extends from Tongjiang City in eastern Heilongjiang Province to Sanya in Hainan Province. It passes through provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong. The highway ends up near Qiongzhou Strait at Hai’an where cars are ferried across to Haikou in Hainan, before ending in Sanya.
US Route 20 (USA)
The US Route 20, 5,415 km long, stretches from Boston (Massachusetts) to Newport (Oregon). Opened in 1926 and renovated in 1940, the highway crosses 9 US states. Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park splits the road in two parts. The highway’s western section intercrosses with US Route 101 while its eastern section parallels the Interstate 90 also known as the Massachusetts Turnpike.
Interstate 90 (USA)
The Interstate 90 (I-90), running from Boston, Massachusetts, to Seattle, Washington, is the longest Interstate Highway in the US. It is 4,860.2 km long. I-90 passes through two of the longest floating bridges, Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge and Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge. Its construction began in 1985. The first sections of the road were built in the 1950s. The main part of the highway parallels the US Route 20 and passes through 13 states.
