OK, so before I start writing A/B/O fic, I want to set my universe rules. They are in no order of importance.
1. Alphas are always male. Betas can be male or female. Omegas can be male or female.
Keep reading and I'll explain.
2. Alphas are the only members of the hierarchy who can impregnate. They generally hold high societal placement, but there are always the slacker assholes (more on that later). They are rare in the population base and the birth of an Alpha is highly prized. I'm guesstimating that my universe is 10 percent Alpha.
3. Betas cannot become pregnant or impregnate. They can have lots and lots of sex. They make up the majority of the population - say 80 percent. They are the "worker bees" of my universe, though Betas certainly hold high positions.
4. Omegas are the only members of the hierarchy who can become pregnant, and only once a year during a heat cycle. Every Omega's cycle is different. They make up the remaining 10 percent of the population.
4. Sexual orientation is not a moral issue in my universe. Some people are heterosexual, some are bisexual, and some are homosexual.
5. Why male Omegas? The real answer is that mpreg is a kink of mine.
6. Why only male Alphas? I've seen female Alphas done in other fic, particularly in
lddurham's Indago series. I love that series, but I just can't buy it. You gotta have a dick to get someone pregnant in my universe. It's totally anti-feminist, I know. Which brings us back to ...
5. Why male Omegas? In my universe, a male Omega's vagina only "surfaces" (for lack of a better term) during his heat cycle. If he's impregnated (and it's not guaranteed), his vagina remains "emerged" until after he gives birth. On a related note, my male Omegas do not have self-lubricating asses because they are impregnated through vaginal penetration. Any sex that an Alpha has with a male Omega then (or a male Beta for that matter), is anal and must include lubricant to be safe.
7. Betas have sex with Alphas. It might even be a monogamous relationship. An Alpha might choose a Beta as a spouse.
8. My universe is an alternate universe set in modern day. The technology is pretty much all the same (I may need to make some up because of A/B/O biologies), but the world looks very different. The population is a lot lower worldwide because the number of people capable of procreation is so restricted. There are cities, but none are quite as large as our modern cities. Cities don't sprawl out so much and are mostly occupied by Betas. Alphas live in larger homes outside the city in a suburban/rural setting. Rural areas make up most of the geography, marked by farm and forest land, and are populated by a mix of Alphas, Betas and Omegas. Local societies are not completely isolated due to of modern transportation and communication, but they tend to be parochial and independent. There is national and international governance (more on that later).
9. Here's where I get a little controversial. Omegas don't have the same rights as Alphas and Betas. They are "owned" by Alphas, who keep harems (hence the large homes outside the city). When an Omega is born, he or she is allowed to stay with their mother until their 12th birthday, at which point they are removed to facilities designed to protect/prepare them until their 18th birthdays. Upon turning 18, they are sold (more on that later).
10. Are Omegas sex slaves? Generally, no. Most Alphas have great respect for their Omegas and sometimes even take an Omega as a spouse, but there are always the assholes.
11. How the sale of Omegas is handled depends entirely on the local governance, how much control the local Alphas have and what kind of character they possess. Some places hold auctions with naked Omegas thrusted on the stage. Most sales are done by silent auction where Alphas inspect Omegas at the facilities and bid on them.
12. There's an underground "resistance" movement (of course there is) that believes in equality for Omegas. It's mostly run by Betas and "freed" Omegas, but there are some Alphas involved. The resistance kidnaps Omegas to keep them from becoming "enslaved." They have tried (unsuccessfully) to create drugs that eliminate an Omega's heat cycle. This is where national/international governance comes back in. Nobody in power likes the resistance, and before you get too excited, it's not my plan to make them the heroes of this story. Quite the opposite, in fact. (evil laugh)
13. When Betas are born, they are also taken from the harem at age 12, but raised by their Alpha father (and his spouse, if he has one). There are no legal restrictions on what position they can hold in politics or business, and many hold high-level spots.
14. Why don't Omegas have any political power? One, they are a precious commodity. Two, during a heat cycle, they are overcome with sexual need and lose decision-making ability. Three, even when they are not in heat, they are susceptible to Alpha pheromones (yeah, yeah, I'm going there). It's biology - they need to be protected.
15. This is going to seem like I'm contradicting myself, but bear with me ... Omegas aren't all locked up in harems. There are working Omegas in my universe, but once again it depends on the Alpha. An Alpha needs to have the resources to protect his Omega from other Alphas, and the Omega's job has to be one that allows for his or her heat cycle/pregnancy.
I'm probably forgetting something important, but that's what I've got for now. Please do comment.
