SPECIAL STITCHES
Panel Separation Stitch:
YO, slip 2 sts together as if to k2tog, k next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO.
This stitch combination forms the panel separation stitches. There are a total of 6 panel separations - one to separate each of the 5 panels, and then along each edge of the shawl. This is to be done on every row between the pattern repeats.
CHARTS
Reading the Charts
Charts are to be repeated 5 times per row when working the shawl.
Charts are worked from right to left.
The wrong side is worked as follows: K2, purl to the last 2 sts, k2.
INSTRUCTIONS
This shawl is knit from the top down. It has 5 sections with a panel separating each section and along each edge.
The increases are worked as follows:
At the beginning of an increase row, knit into the front and back of the stitch, knit in pattern to the last 2 stitches, knit into the front and back of the stitch, knit 1.
The bind off edging is the exception, explained below:
CO 19 sts.
R1 (WS): Purl.
R2 (RS): (K in front and back) 18 times, k1 - (37 sts).
R3: Purl.
R4: K2, (YO, slip 2 sts together as if to k2tog, k next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, k3) 5 times, YO, slip 2 sts together as if to k2tog, k next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, k2 - (37 sts).
R5: K2, purl to last 2 sts, k2 (NOTE: this will be the back side of the shawl for the rest of the pattern).
R6: K2, (YO, slip 2 sts together as if to k2tog, k next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, kf&b, kf&b, k1) 5 times, YO, slip 2 sts together as if to k2tog, k next st, pass 2 slipped stitches over, YO, k2 - (47 sts).
R7: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
R8: Begin Chart 1.
Note: The beginning and the last 2 sts are selvage sts (knit in both right and wrong sides. Knit the Panel Separation stitches before each section and use the markers among the sections.
R9: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
R10 (Increase Row): Kf&b, pattern to last 2 sts, kf&b, k1.
Working from chart 1, you will be increasing every 4 rows as established (i.e. Rows 12, 16, 20, etc.)
When finished with chart 1, work chart 2 ending with a wrong side row.
Do not cut yarn.
Edging:
Note: Each repeat of the edge pattern should match perfectly to either one diamond at the bottom of the shawl, or one panel separation - i.e. each point of the edging will either mirror the point of a diamond, or line up with the center of a panel separation.
With RS facing, CO 13 stitches, turn.
Row 1: Knit across and knit the 13th stitch together with the first stitch of the shawl. Turn.
Row 2: Knit. Turn.
Row 3: Rep Row 1.
Row 4: Knit. Turn.
Row 5: Rep Row 1.
Row 6: Purl. Turn.
Next row: Begin with row 13 of edging chart.
Note: The next row should be the center stitch of the first panel separation. The bind off is a bit tricky, but easy once you get the hang of it. All wrong side rows are purled. On rows 1 and 21 of the edging chart, you will knit the last two stitches of the edging together with the 13th st + the 1st st on shawl, so yes, you will be knitting 3 stitches together. On the right side rows, you will knit the last edging stitch together with the edge st of the shawl. On the return rows, purl the 2 sts together. This will create the bind off edge. There is however one exception and that is on rows 11 and 12.
Row 11: Follow chart, knit the last edging stitch together with the shawl stitch, knit 1 st into next st on shawl.
Row 12: Purl 2 stitches together, purl to end. Turn.
Row 13: Follow chart.
When 4 blanket stitches remain, knit all rows until no blanket stitches remain.
Bind off.
Block shawl and enjoy!
