Ryu Seong-hyun wins floor exercise at the 1st FIG World Cup in Cairo
Ryu Seong-hyun (Korea National Sport University), a promising star in Korean gymnastics, faltered in the third competition of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Cup Series, where qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics was at stake.
Ryu Seong-hyun scored 14.133 points in the floor exercise finals of the 3rd competition of the FIG World Cup Series held at the Baku National Gymnastics Stadium in Azerbaijan on the 9th, ranking 5th out of 8 athletes.
Ryu Seong-hyun, who won the first series floor exercise held in Cairo, Egypt in the middle of last month and earned 30 points, placed third and added 20 points in the second series in Cottbus, Germany a week later.
In the 3rd competition, he scored 66 points, adding 16 points for 5th place, but it is still too early to feel at ease. His performance in the fourth and final competition held in Doha, Qatar from April 17th to 20th has become important.
FIG grants the right to participate in the
Paris Olympics to the top 10 athletes in each men's and women's event by adding up the scores from the three best-performing events in the fourth round of the World Cup series.
Korean male gymnasts missed out on a ticket to the Paris Olympic team event at last year's World Championships and are trying to get a ticket to Paris as individuals.
First, Lee Jun-ho (Cheonan City Hall) confirmed his participation in the Paris Olympics in the individual all-around, which includes all six events: floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bars.
Korea also secured one share of the
National Olympic Committee (NOC), which is allocated to countries that cannot participate in the Olympic team competition. The Korean Gymnastics Association will hold a selection competition in early May to decide who will participate in the Paris Olympics.
If Ryu Seong-hyun wins a ticket to Paris by taking first place in the World Cup Series, up to three Korean male athletes can compete on the Olympic stage.
Unlike men, female gymnasts won the right to participate in the Olympic team event for the first time in 36 years at last year's World Championships.
