BIRTH-DAY
Netherlands/2004/Betacam/colour/36 min/without dialogue
The Nederlands Dans Theater, a beacon on Europe's choreographic landscape, has been directed by choreographer Jirí Kylián for the last twenty-five years. It embraces three troupes: the main company NDT I, the junior company NDT II, and the senior company NDT III, which thus "retrace the three ages of a dancer." Birth-Day was created with the dancers of NDT III (Canadian Gioconda Barbuto among them), whose physical presence and theatrical and comedic talent are beyond praise. Against a baroque backdrop, three men and two women seated at a table in period costumes indulge in polite banter and idle gossip. But who are they celebrating? "Me," the two women reply. The erotic and heroic dreams of the protagonists are soon unveiled. This exuberant work on the passing of time, fraught with self-mockery, is swept along by the music of Mozart. "Between the day of our birth and day of our death, time passes, filled with creativity, desire and confusion," says Kylián. "And sometimes we make ourselves ridiculous." According to the choreographer, Mozart understood all of the world's richness, fantasy, buffoonery and madness, and that life was nothing more than a masquerade or rehearsal.
