The football shirt is a vest with sleeves and a collar, designed to be worn while playing football. It has been a part of the sport ever since players started wearing long trousers instead of knickerbockers. It is also commonly known as a 'jersey', which is short for jersey number.

 

The first ever football shirts were made of thick cotton material, but today they are made from polyester and other synthetic fabrics. The first shirts had numbers on the back for identification purposes, but this practice was soon abandoned in favour of names.

 

There are many different styles of football shirt available today. They vary in colour and design depending on the team or player who wears them, but all have some common features such as two short sleeves, a round neckline and three or four visible buttons down the front.
