Hello,

Anton and I wanted to let you know about Yepas progress. She has passed

some significant milestones recently, thanks in large part to Antons steady

work with her in between our sessions.

Best of all, Yepa seems to be very well and happy these days. Her bond with

Anton is evident  she stays close and keeps an eye out for him wherever she

is. Her ear infections have cleared up, she eats well, her digestion is

healthy, and she is active, playful, and enthusiastic about learning. She

loves to go out with Anton wherever he goes, but she is also happy to lie

around and snooze when there is nothing better to do. She very rarely barks,

and is able to tolerate Antons absence, without whining or barking, on the

rare occasions that he has to leave her at home. She has a remarkable

temperament, very calm and accommodating, but she also has a mind of her

own, is intelligent, and appears to have a sense of humor, all of which are

becoming more evident as she becomes more fluent in operant learning

procedures. She loves training, which to her is simply play and a form of

puzzle solving. She often comes to Anton to invite him to get in the game

and teach her something more!

Yepa has now achieved almost all of the training goals we set out for her

when she came to live with Anton. She is most definitely providing

companionship, accompanying Anton wherever he goes, staying close when he is

unwell, nudging him for cuddles, and generally being a great canine friend.

She is well behaved in public, walking nicely on leash next to Antons

wheelchair, riding the MAX and taking elevators with no problem. She

understands and enjoys the training process now. It is a joy to see her eyes

light up and the enthusiasm with which she tackling a learning task, where

before she struggled to understand and take risks. As a result, she picks up

new skills more quickly. She can turn on a light switch, press the panel

that opens the front door, and pick up fallen objects and hand them to

Anton. She sits and lies down on cue, comes when called, and offers a paw

whenever she is asked (and even when she isnt  but thats another story 

now that she has learned how to do it, it is her favorite trick).

Some of these skills are still in their early stages, for example, she can

pick up soft objects but not objects that are heavy or made of hard

materials. She needs to work on pulling, so she can help with opening doors.

She is working on going to a mat or bed and lying down on cue. She still

gets distracted when she is out and about, so she needs more practice in

performing basic skills in outdoor settings, such as restaurants, stores,

and other places. We are working to build on all of these skills, as well

as prepare Yepa for her Public Access Test.

At the recent rose City Classic Dog Show, Anton and Yepa were guests of the

Standard Poodle Club, and participated in a Meet the Breed event where

people could ask about poodles and learn about the different types of work

they do. This was arranged by Deb Phillips, Yepas former owner. Yepa was

very excited to see Deb and one of the dogs she used to live with, but she

was just as happy to leave them and come home with Anton. She clearly knows

this is where she belongs now. Anton and I both felt that her life as a

service dog is bringing out her intelligence more than her old life as a

show dog, and we sense that this is much more satisfying to her.

As always, it continues to be a pleasure for me to work with Yepa and Anton.

I am looking forward to giving you more news of their progress as a working

team in the future.

In spite of being sick over the past few weeks you have made great progress with Yepa! Here are the different things you have achieved together recently, and in our session today.

Push

It was exciting to see Yepa working with the door opener – at last, she understands how to press the metal panel firmly, and she is being successful almost every time now. It was fun to see her press with her nose until she finds the sweet spot on the metal panel, then look at the door as it opens, then look back to you for her reward. Well done, both of you – this has taken a lot of practice and patience!

Get It/Bring It

Yepa obviously enjoys picking up (Get It) the rope and handing it to you (Bring It). She is much more accurate with this – she places it in your hand most times now, and appears to understand both cues.

She had been having trouble diversifying this task to other objects so we tried a few training aids – for example, we tied the rope to the plastic holder attached to your clicker. This helped her get used to the new sensations and sounds associated with this object, and she quickly began picking it up and giving it to you. Soon she was able to pick it up with the rope removed. Next we tried soft objects like dish towels, which she had no trouble at all with. Then we tried objects with a firmer “mouth feel”  a plastic lid, a soft camera case, and a leather wallet carrier. She did well with all of these except the leather carrier– which was too heavy at this point. So we removed the wallet from inside the case, to make it lighter and easier for her to pick up. She did better but needs practice with this. The key here is to gradually introduce levels of difficulty, moving from the known to the unfamiliar in small steps.

Down We worked on Sit then Down, changing positions and working on improving the reliability of her response. After all the other things she has been learning, she seemed to regress in her willingness to lie down on cue, but today she picked it up again and by the end of the session was lying down nicely on cue, both from Sit position and sometimes from Stand. She practiced on carpet and on linoleum.

The bare handed man was under dressed for the weather and obviously cold. He asked me for change. I gave him everything I had, $2.37. He started talking to me but couldn’t look me in the eye. As he was telling me how cold and hungry he was, I watched as he was unable to control his hands. It was like he was playing an invisible piano. He had a very hard time talking to me and I could see he was much more uncomfortable then I was. He clearly had boundary issues but I never felt threatened in anyway. He kept staring off and would occasionally look in my direction but never at me. He stood about 1 or 2 feet in front of me and asked me to drive him to a shelter because its “warm there and they have food”. He informed me that he was “homeless and very hungry”. He then told me that he “was not lying to me”. He asked me to buy him some food and gloves. I thought about what to say. I knew he would have hard time understanding. I don’t have any money. My family is struggling to survive each day. I would literally be taking away from what little my family has and I just couldn’t. I was trying to figure out how to explain to him that I couldn’t help him. I was lost for words.

Then something happened that shook me to the core and completely broke my heart. As I was trying to form the words I needed to tell him no, he looked me in the eyes. All of the sudden I was looking at Gavin. This bare handed man was my son 20 or 30 years from now. I was overcome with emotion. It was like I was run over by a freight train. I can’t put words together to describe what that moment was like.

Уже писал об этом пару раз, пишу еще раз. Потому что, честно говоря, не знаю, куда следует писать в подобных случаях.

С некоторых пор, в html тэгах, находящихся внутри тэга div начал вставляться пустой тэг lj-embed. Проблем с этим больших нет, за исключением того, что этот тэг все равно интерпретируется броузерами, (к примеру firefox). А поскольку этот тэг пустой, то он изображается в посте в виде пустого окна. Так как я делаю записи не в самом ЖЖ, а в своем блоге, (сюда запись только кросппостится), то приходится постоянно просматривать записи в ЖЖ и удалять этот пустой тэг руками. Оно не очень утомительно, но& с детства не люблю лишних движений, особенно там, где еще платишь за это деньги.

Чтобы было понятно то, что я имею в виду, в этом посте я специально оставляю пост в том виде, в каком он кросспостится из моего журнала. Если в этом посте вы видите пустое окно, в котором, якобы, должно быть видео, то  это и есть то самое, о чем я пишу. Значит ваш броузер тоже интерпретирует этот тэг. А так как тэг пустой, то&  окно тоже пустое. То есть, хочу обратить внимание на то, что в моей записи нет никаких видеофрагментов. Только текст.

У меня два вопроса.

К друзьям. Кто подскажет, куда в подобных случаях нужно писать, чтобы обратили внимание?

Смотрю вчера очередной сериал из серии ни о чем, но русские  плохие. Показывают комнату, которая огорожена желтыми лентами с надписью во всю длину. Так, как это делают американские полицейские, огораживая место, где было совершено преступление.

Я не знаю, делают ли так в России  в Америке делают. Но самое забавное было не в этом. Несмотря на то, что место преступления находилось в Америке, (в Калифорнии, если конкретно) надпись на ленте была сделана кириллицей. Пишу кириллицей, потому что то, что там было написано, очень сложно охарактеризовать как  надпись на русском языке.

Потому что написано там было:  Не введите! Не введите! Не введите!..

Вот все время меня гложет сомнение, неужели так сложно нанять хоть какого-нибудь консультанта, говорящего по-русски? Особенно там, в Калифорнии, где делается весь этот киноширпотреб?

Никак мне этого не понять&

Сегодня все счастливые обладатели Samsung Epic 4g замерли в ожидании. На сегодня намечено начало апгрейда всех этих телефонов на новую версию программного обеспечения, основанного на Google Froyo 2.2. Намечена на сегодня, несмотря на то, что сам девайс вышел 1-ого сентября, прошлого года. И тогда же я его себе и купил.

Сколько прошло времени  считайте сами. А я, пока, буду надеяться на то, что намеченный на сегодня апгрейд, все-таки, состоиться

Давно я не писал ничего, ни про баскетбол, ни про команду TrailBlazers, ни про NBA

Думаю, здесь я еще смогу наверстать потерянное. А вот об интересном, очень хочется рассказать уже сейчас, пока оно свежее.

В самом начале сезона в команде TrailBlazers случился скандал. Игрок, очень хороший игрок Rudy Fernandez требовал от менеджмента команды, чтобы они срочно обменяли его на кого-нибудь из команд в тех городах, где есть испаноязычная коммьюнити. В случае, если обмена не случится, Руди просил отпустить его в Испанию. В Портланде он играть не хотел никак.

Jan 20 and 27 we worked on the usual tasks and on 27th we went for a walk to the park because it as such a nice day. Jan 22nd was the dog show – an opportunity for working outside in a very stimulating environment.

Today (Feb 2) was an exciting moment – you demonstrated the progress Yepa made since we met less than a week ago.

Get It

She aced it! she really seems to have the hang of this now! She was picking up the rope and putting it into your hand more often than not now.

We tried some new objects – she was able to pick up your stick with the cord handle, and also a pen (although she did chew it!) and a wallet (also tried to chew it) so we have more work to do there but it was exciting to see that she has begun to generalize the cue to other things besides the knotted rope.

Push

Continuing to build strength of push – she did it a couple of times today. The push panel isn’t consistent so this makes it harder for her but she is getting better at it.

Down We worked on Sit then Down, changing positions and working on improving the reliability of her response. It helped to use the puzzle as a reward for Down

Mat – Down on mat – this was more successful than on the floor.

Back – I began to teacher to back up

Lastly we gave her the chance to play with the Nose Puzzle, which is she is so good with she finds the treat straight away every time.

It was a fun session, and you have done so well with practicing to bring her to this point!

К вечеру подскочила температура. Часов в 9 вечера, когда я последний раз мерил, она была 100 F°.

Сейчас уже 106 F°. Ощущение совсем не из приятных. Кажется, снова вернулся гайморит. Погода неустойчивая, пару дней назад у нас было относительно тепло и я, воспользовавшись моментом, вывел Йипу на прогулку.

Пробыли полчаса в парке и& результат.

Многие знают, что конкретно в самом LJ я постов не пишу. Пишу я в своем журнале, откуда и идет трансляция дальше, в том числе и в LJ.

Заметил, что в LJ начали появляться лишние теги embed. Появляться начали они совсем недавно. Вчерашние мои посты обходились без них. Пишу так, потому что и вчерашние и сегодняшние посты  с фотографиями. Но вчера этот тэг не вставлялся, а сегодня, вдруг, начал материализовываться. Приходится его убирать руками. Что не очень трудно, но.. с учетом того, что пишу я совсем в другом месте и обычно только там все и правлю& В общем, напрягает немного.

Как я понимаю, тэг этот появляется потому, что вставляются фотографии в пост. Вот только& раньше этого тэга не было. Буквально вчера не было.

Кто знает, откуда это все берется и можно ли это каким-либо образом прекратить?

Вообще-то, это у нее уши.

Я не знаю, видно ли это на фотографиях, но Йипа очень выделялась среди своих сопородников. По росту. Она не только казалась крупнее, она  действительно, крупнее всех пуделей, там присутствующих. Я имею в виду, конечно, своих сопородников, Standard Poodles.

Вот, кто скажет, что собаки не умеют улыбаться?!

Или,  вот?

Йипа вместе со своей прежней хозяйкой и со своей прежней подругой. С этой дамой Йипа жила в течение нескольких лет.

Вот, кстати, никак не могу я понять всю прелесть подобных пуделиных стрижек. Йипа когда-то тоже носила такое же. В течение получаса я наблюдал, как этой собачке накручивали все эти бумажки, резиночки и пр& И, честно говоря, мне становилось очень жаль и тех, кто стрижет, и тех кого стригут подобным образом.

Это же только представить себе, сколько терпения нужно собаке, чтобы пройти через все эти красоты. Мне кажется, это больше мучение для собак, чем что-то еще.
